My D just got an offer from the Vassar waiting list just 4 hours ago. I’m very proud of her! But here’s the dilemma: Vassar was her first choice when she responded in late March. She was accepted by Wellesley, and said yes to their offer swiftly. But meanwhile, over the last 6 - 7 weeks, she decided she wanted to take a “gap year”, and just yesterday applied to a program she’s excited about. She believes (and I and her mom support her in this) that the gap year will give her wonderful, maturing experience. The catch: if she takes the Vassar offer, she can’t take the gap year.

Here’s the question: is there any way that if we go up to Poughkeepsie tomorrow (she must respond by Friday noon), that they will waive the requirement she attend next year, or is that a quixotic wish? And should someone give up a gap year desire to go to a college that they would like to go to, or go to one that’s still pretty darn close to the first choice, and take the gap year?

Any guidance would be so helpful.
