Vassar Class of 2029 Official RD Thread

Thank you!!

S25 accepted
Could someone tell me what proportion of male students are not recruited athletes? Wondering about potential peer group given the small # of men at Vassar compared to most other LACs.

I think about 20% of students are athletes? So it may be like 25% of males and 15% of females or something. My son is not an athlete (his roommate is) and none of his closest friends are athletes. Lots of kids do club and intramural sports for fun (mine included) and he’s definitely friends with some athletes, but his core crowd of friends aren’t varsity athletes.

Just popping in to note that Vassar does not have a football team. So when you think of ā€œmale athletesā€ keep in mind that at Vassar that may mean mens volleyball, mens fencing, mens squash, etc. (These are sports that are often cut for men at other schools to make room for lots of guys on the football team.) I don’t know if that changes your opinion of what a male athlete would be like at Vassar.
I will also add that all the athletes I know there (D22 is an athlete) are also very involved in at least one other org (a capella, dance, cultural, etc.), so the athletes don’t just keep to themselves. This was a very important consideration for my D as she didn’t want to be siloed as an athlete.
Hope that helps!

Would love some input on how the admitted students day was today. Considering going next week. TIA

Interested too. We can’t make it to admitted students day- we will be going during D25’s spring break.

Attended. Mostly panel heavy of a general nature (research, dorm life, study abroad, etc.), with an underwhelming resource fair, lunch in the student dining hall, and capped with campus tours.

As a parent, disappointed that there weren’t any opportunities for students to directly connect with the departments they were interested in. They did offer that recently over webinar so glad my son took advantage of that instead of waiting for admitted students day.

From my son’s perspective, he loved the panel just for students which included a trio of mini-seminars. It was his only real glimpse into the actual academic side of things and he loved what he experienced.

Thank you for this info. It’s helpful- we’ll temper our expectations. I’m disappointed there’s no opportunity to connect with faculty and at least take a class. All the other LACs have offered this.
My son did not do the webinar unfortunately. I think it must have happened when we were traveling.

I might email and ask if there’s an opportunity for a quick meeting. I know my D22 was able to meet with the dance faculty when she was there for admitted students day (there weee a few of them meeting at the same time).

In our experience faculty are excited to share; the admissions office less so. Which makes it good that faculty will be the important ones going forward!

They can sign up to sit in on a class during the weekday- I didn’t realize that wasn’t part of the weekday admitted students day schedule, since I didn’t look at the details. We are visiting during D25’s vacation week next week, and she signed up to sit in on the class. That might be an option for you if you can extend the time on campus.

D25 did the virtual open house, and it was good. She went to the psychology one, although she is not sure what she wants to major in. She initially thought she would check out more subjects, but then she wasn’t sure if it would be worth joining another later in the session.

Sure. They did have a trio of mini-seminars during the hour-ish panel for just students but the subjects were predetermined (public health, politics, and climate change) and didn’t align with my son’s primary interest even though he did enjoy them a lot.

That’s good to know. Thank you. They would not align with my son’s interests much either. Are there options for other events during that panel?

Not really. The panel just for families happened simultaneously. I did appreciate the frankness of the college president who touched on several tough topics, of her own choosing as well as those questions leveled from audience members.

Thank you so much for sharing this. It’s super helpful. I’m already planning out how we will spend our very limited time there. Did you happen to go to any of the afternoon panels, and if so, were any of them better than others? We’ll have to pick and choose.

Sorry, we only had time to shoehorn Residential Life into the mix without missing lunch.
