I don’t want to hijack this thread, but I might just take the opportunity to solicit opinions on VCU. My DS is a hs junior who is taking something of a tumble grade-wise. My best guess is his SATs will be decent but not outstanding. He is a quiet kid who will not likely not have glowing teacher recs because they mostly don’t know him.

Ennyhoo. We’re a little nervous about the possibilities he has left in colleges and VCU is something we might look into. However, we live in VA and are fairly familiar with Richmond and the VCU campus. I’ve always considered the neighborhood kind of a pit. I know there are shootings on campus that do not make it into the news. We have friends with a son who attended a summer Governor’s School program there and when he asked where he might go for a jog in the evenings, he was told, “Oh you don’t go running by yourself in this area.” Seeing the above story in the paper this morning just made me think, “Oh great.” That said, many many kids from our area go there and I know enjoy the school. Me, I’d rather send him to Missoula.
