Vegas shooting, 50 dead

I thought perhaps she had jilted him but then he wouldn’t have sent her so much money.

I also wonder when an autopsy result will be made public. Did he have drugs in his system? Did he have some terminal disease or brain findings indicative of dementia?

Those of us who have been around CC for a long time know that we have had this discussion many, many times through the years after every one of these horrific events. People will mourn, they’ll come up with suggestions, they’ll rage against the horror, they’ll repeat the thoughts and prayers mantra, all of which will accomplish absolutely nothing. Changes will not happen and in a few weeks, if even that long, everyone will move on to something else. The fascination and obsession with guns exhibited by far too many Americans will never end, and the rest of the civilized world will shake their heads in amazement and disbelief.

Absolutely right, @alwaysamom CC is just a microcosm of the larger American public.

Thoughts & prayers, thoughts & prayers, always thoughts & prayers.

Thoughts & prayers don’t stop bullets.

I would add to Sue’s list:

8 - absolutely no online or mail order sales of guns
9- required fingerprint or other high tech trigger locks on new guns
10 - require insurance
11 - require some kind of safety training (I’m not sure what, if any, is required now but I think most people are woefully ignorant at how easily children can find and shoot a gun)
12 - require gun safes

Of course, your insurance can go down if you have extra training and gun safes, etc.

As for this shooter, I don’t care about his motive. Motives pretend to help us figure out how to prevent this from happening again but we all know the big way we can help prevent this from happening again!

About the Phillipines - there was a mass shooting in a casino there fairly recently. I hadn’t heard of it but maybe this guy had considering his connection through his girlfriend.

Who has the power to ban the production, importation, and sales of automatic rifles in the US? Has any agency been able to compile a list of automatic rifles already produced and sold to consumers?

He set up video equipment in the room to record the carnage. Horrid.
I want to know his motive -

I’m curious about how you are going to mandate insurance companies to insure guns that are used illegally?

I’m another one who is just not at all interested in the motive. What’s the point of learning it? We’ll never do anything with it.

Maybe he wanted fame.
Maybe he wanted people to feel pain like he felt.
Maybe he was mentally ill.
Maybe he just wanted to kill people.

What are we going to do with any of that information? We’re not reforming the mental healthcare system, we’re not going to pass new gun restrictions, we’re not going to do anything.

Honestly, and especially with white males it seems, all learning the motive seems to do is paint the killer in a more sympathetic light.

Well since it now has been revealed that he used something called a “bump-stock” to make the weapons fully automatic, add those to the list of things that should be outlawed. The guns found at the crime scene do not look like anything a homeowner would use for self defense. They look like combat weapons of some sort.

Its my understanding (reading articles about the LV shooting) that automatic weapons are banned but that pre-banned automatic weapons (pre-1986) can still be sold/transferred but they must be registered with the feds. Here is a letter which sets for the number that have been registered (as of 2016 anyways) from Bureau of ATF:

In terms of the gun show loophole its my understanding that gun dealers must perform background checks for any sale. Whether it occurs in their shop or at a gun show. I do not know what proportion of guns sold at gun shows (having never been to one) are sold by gun dealers.

@romanigypsyeyes: “I’m another one who is just not at all interested in the motive. What’s the point of learning it? We’ll never do anything with it.”

This is true if he acted alone. What if he is part of a group? And they have plans to murder innocent people in the near future?

Sometimes I wonder if this century is starting the beginning of the end of the USA as we know it. DH made a comment last night. He said the gun issue is so polarized, that if we attempt to start confiscating guns, it could break out into a civil war. (I believe Australia was confiscating them).

I don’t know what can be done other than electing candidates, starting at the local level, based on their gun control feelings.

If you hit someone on purpose with your car, doesn’t your auto liability insurance cover the victim payouts even though the car was used illegally?

I thought of guns as simply another hazard in the home. Using something illegally usually takes it out of the realm of an insurable act. It’s also off the property too. But visiting children who find the gun and do something tragic with it are covered, in terms of the gun owner’s liability, just as visiting children who injure themselves on the trampoline or in the swimming pool are.

If you lie about having any of those things and someone is injured, then the damages will NOT be covered. Just as now.

It seems every time one of these events happens we hear excuses as to why it happened. “It’s not guns, it’s…”

It’s bullying. We need better anti-bullying programs.
It’s Islamic terrorism. We need to keep out Middle Easterners.
It’s the mentally ill. We need better mental health programs.
It’s domestic violence. We need better DV programs.

While we may need much of the above, what ties them all together is the easy access we as Americans have to guns. When are we going to stop making excuses?

From an Op-ed in The Observer:

Another day, another headline. “Children hide in bathroom during shooting at home day care”

http://fox43.com/2017/10/03/children-hide-in-bathroom-during-shooting-at-california-home-day-care/

Luckily, no one was hit or killed.

I just had a very long conversation with my insurance company (USAA) because after thinking about your question I wasn’t 100% sure but I have been assured that if the car was used in a deliberate attempt to cause harm/damage the insurance company would not cover the claim.

This conflates ownership with use. In many states, a 6 year old can own and possess a vehicle, that is have it titled in their name. At least in Texas, a 6 year old can’t hunt without being under the supervision of someone at least 17. I would be surprised if any state allowed a 6 year old to hunt on public land without supervision.
