Vegetable Garden 2014 Update

just watered the 'maters and mint and basil

Lizard, after being around VCs for a while, I would not be surprised that such a crazy idea would get funded. The “Internet of things” is the current bubble, IMO.

… Better yet - your tomato plant sends a signal to Amazon which, in turn, sends a drone that sprinkles fertilizer around the garden. ;)

This is when I miss the location part of the old CC- so much more useful than silly avatars. Please let us know your general area.

what’s zone 7?

http://www.burpee.com/gardening/content/gygg/growing-zone/growingzoneinfo.html

S2 built an addition to my raised beds, so I now have a 4x12 space. Oregano, spearmint and tarragon survived the winter. Have planted mortgage buster and super sweet 100 tomatoes, two butternut squash, an eggplant, three kinds of peppers, onions, swiss chard and a bunch of herbs. We’ll see what survives. Have already had to replace the dill. Weather has been lovely – no major humidity yet.

Bummer. One of the branches with a bunch of yellow flowers and little green cherry tomatoes growing broke off :frowning: But there are others. But I was sad to see this bunch, which had a lot on it, bite the big one.

One big branch bent over already, but I’ve tied it to a stake and hopefully it and all the tomatoes growing off of it will survive. Many of the branches already have grown taller than the cages and 6’ stakes. I bought the tallest stakes I could find. Not sure what to do.

^^Bummer!
Noticed a lot of growth when I went to water my raised bed at the community garden this weekend. Also noticed that the leaf mulch on top of the soil appears to be an amazing thing - no weeds to pick after a week of mulch!

Giving my peas one more week and if they are not growing, they are coming out. I suspect a bunny may have munched them - they were taller, then one day - were not!

Anyone else having trouble with basil plants this year?? Both myself and my daughter have struggled with plants that just didn’t seem to survive from the get go. I was able to trim one down and it seems to be coming back. I’ve never had issues with basil before. (my zone - 6)

My basil didnt do well (we had a cold snap) but it is coming back. The dill didnt survive.

@countingdown - When I lived in Illinois I had trouble with mint spreading, it can be pretty invasive… So in Georgia I just grow it in pots. Do you have it contained?

It’s in the raised bed, but not otherwise contained. It’s a nice little clump.

My basil plants are growing very slowly while everything else is taking off. I think I put the basil in too soon. We have had a few nights in the last month that were in the low 40s and one morning there was even a light frost on my car windows. Right now, the basil is doing better because it’s been warmer. My lettuce (I’ve got romaine and leaf varieties) are going great and I’ve already harvested some romaine. I also have a ton of sorrel–I’ve cut it back twice and have made sorrel soup.

That might have been it - planted the basil a little early.

I’ll second the mention that mint SPREADS and can become very invasive. It can root and grow in just a few specks of dirt it seems!

Yeah, my Sweet Basil seems to be a slow grower. Transplanted Purple Basil yesterday and this morning it still looks like it has gone 5 rounds with Muhammad AIi, i.e. flat on the ground. Just placed some Large Leaf Basil seeds in a pot yesterday, too. Hope my mint spreads.

I just read about a new veggie that I want to try; Malabar Red Spinach. Anyone ever plant it?

I have finally gotten my garden in. I don’t remember ever being this late. CountingDown- beware, I am currently fighting mint that escaped from a pot. I have sprayed this area twice already with roundup and it still keeps poking up.

My mint is in a pot but is spreading.

It’s notorious, but I can’t seem to grow it! In the meantime, here are my first tomatoes.

I grew Malabar Red and Green Spinach, it took over my garden but not as much as the mint. The mint caused me to abandon my garden. I have to figure out how to grow on air on my house.

I have spearmint – wonder if there is a difference among mints as far as spreading habits?

Unless those are photos in the dark of night with no moon or starlight, I cant see a darned thing, shrinkrap.
