My daughter and I are taking our last college trip in early October. We will be looking for GOOD vegetarian restaurants near these universities: Wesleyan, UPenn, Cornell, URochester.

Any ideas?

Any ideas?

Restaurants that are all-vegetarian, or which offer decent vegetarian offerings?

Many ethnic cuisines have traditional dishes that happen to be vegetarian (though they may also have non-vegetarian traditional dishes), so if the latter is acceptable, any of these should be fine.

Moosewood Restaurant (they of the famous vegetarian cookbooks) is in Ithaca! The only problem is they don’t take reservations, I think, and it can be crowded. But more than worth the wait, imho. S2 didn’t care for Ithaca College but had a great meal :)

I second Moosewood when visiting Cornell.

In Philadelphia, Essene has a wonderful buffet. It is not right by UPenn, but it would be worth going a bit out of your way for, if you are going to have a car in the city.

There’s a great vegetarian restaurant in Middletown: [It’s Only Natural Restaurant ®](http://www.ionrestaurant.com/)

It’s a bit further, but Clare’s Corner-Copia in New Haven is great: [Claires Corner Copia - Vegetarian Restaurant, Sustainable, Organic, Cookbooks, Mexican, Italian, Yale, Connecticut, New Haven](http://www.clairescornercopia.com/2menu.htm)

I also want to third Moosewood.

Second to Claires in New Haven and Moosewood in Ithaca.

Ahimsa in New Haven is vegan/vegetarian. It was founded by a local student while he was attending NYU and his family has pitched in to support his dream.

One of my kids is a vegetarian at URochester. The Owl House is a very good place, probably her favorite. Another really good place to eat is John’s Tex-Mex, which is a good version of what the name says. Another I’ve not eaten at is Aja Noodle. There are a bunch of vegetarian friendly restaurants in Rochester.

As for New Haven, Mamoun’s Falafel has been on Howe Street near campus since the mid-70’s. Open til 3AM. Used to be til 4AM if memory serves.

For lunches in Penn’s neighborhood, University City, there’s an all-vegetarian food truck called Magic Carpet that gets rave reviews. My D1 has eaten there a couple of times and says it’s really good, high-quality food, and inexpensive.

Apart from that I don’t know of any all-vegetarian restaurants in the immediate area, but a vegetarian can usually eat pretty well at an Indian or Ethiopian restaurant, of which there are several in University City.

Moosewood is definitely the place in Ithaca. Also in Ithaca you can get a terrific breakfast or lunch at the Ithaca Bakery (2 locations); it’s not all veg but they have some fantastic veggie soups and sandwiches, plus bagels and breakfast sandwiches. I especially like their regional specialty sandwiches from different parts of NY State, though most of those have meat.

Claire’s in New Haven I’ve always found a little disappointing. There’s an all-veg Indian restaurant in Middletown, CT that gets pretty good reviews, Udupi Bhavan. I’ve eaten at similar places in Chicago and had a fantastic experience. Specializes in South Indian fare, which is a little different from what many Americans are accustomed to in standard Americanized Indian restaurants, which is mostly a mix of different regional cuisines from North India and Pakistan.

If you’re traveling by car between Middletown and points south, there’s a fantastic, funky little vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Bridgeport called Bloodroot, Actually, they call it a feminist vegetarian restaurant and bookstore, and that it is, and it’s been there since the dawning of the Age of Aquarius, run by a collective of feminist women who love to cook healthy, organic, locally-sourced, and scrumptious meals.

I’ve traveled these parts with my vegetarian daughter. Not Rochester, though.

I love Udupi Bhavan. My family travels an hour to go there – hands down our favorite Indian in the state. It is South Indian (dosas) so a bit different from many Indian restaurants.

Bloodroot! Used to be a favorite when we lived in Bridgeport. Only about half an hour from New Haven.
