Verbal phrases that would make you instantly stop talking to a person

So there are some verbal phrases indicative of other unattractive elements in a person’s personality, that if mentioned, will make others immediately stop taking to such a person.

Of course, the person couldn’t have revealed everything about himself. Others who see that person’s posts can only guess at other traits of that person that correlate with the person’s revealed traits (and guess that those other traits that correlate with the person’s revealed traits are undesirable).

Are there phrases that will make you instantly want to stop talking to the person? Of course, the stock of such phrases is different from person to person. Some people do enjoy talking to people with unusual life experiences and unusual ways of seeing the world, after all (though this number of people seems to be small in percentage).

I don’t know - I might have a tendency to utter such phrases (maybe since I’m kind of an academic elitist in that I don’t really value anything non-academic - and those values tend to eventually show up).

==

For example, phrases like…

“I murdered several people” (though in the majority of cases, this phrase seems to be taken as sarcastic).
“My SAT score is 800 and I want to give you some advice to do well on the SAT and advice to get into all of the colleges you desire”

 • phrases indicative of elitism, intolerance, or racism

I think I am pretty tolerant, but I tend to avoid people who use a lot of profanity and crude humor. I also am a bit cautious when people make claims that they are honest, good, and religious.

"what’s up my N****…I HATE THAT!

Assuming you’re referring to phrases that I would read ONLINE… I can’t think of any specific phrases. It’s more an overall attitude that annoys me (one of arrogance, intolerance, and… eh, basically all of the stuff that you listed, InquilineKea).

Then there are some people on CC who simply rub me the wrong way for no specific reason… Well, actually, there are people in “real life” that annoy me despite being nice or polite… there’s simply a subtle quality that I find irritating. I think this is true for everyone, though. There are certain personalities that just don’t mix.

Hm - yeah - that’s interesting. How many people have such attitudes - and does everyone find such people annoying? (they do sound like traits that would sound universally annoying - maybe around people I’d call rational). Hard to say - some people are arrogant but there are people who can definitely relate to most forms of arrogance (as there are people who feel the same strand of arrogance). Intolerance seems to be an attribute of particular social groups.

Interesting. Generally I don’t dislike people - but there are certainly people who I know as incompatible (and since they would usually feel the same way towards me - I don’t explicitly note anyone as “not worth talking to” for reasons that pertain to a particular individual rather than reasons that pertain to a perceived group that the individual belongs to).

“Evolution is just a theory! God’s word is pure…How could you deny god? I’ll pray for you.” <— something like that and if they’re serious…

^ what’s wrong with the truth?

^ what’s wrong with your brain?

hm - I remember - there was this one person who kept on MSN’ing me about some of his role playing games. Though I was not interested, I still continued to respond with “interesting”, “intriguing”, “hmm, that sounds nice”, “I wish I had the time to try that,” “I see”, “lol”, “okay so how does that work?”, etc… Eventually I blocked him :p

Usually people are able to detect this though

Damn I thought I killed the thread…some people don’t get the hints.

“I sweat a lot at night” was a real turnoff for me.

Hmmm online:

people who are elitist about their music. any statements that imply the poster has some absolute knowledge about the quality of certain groups/albums/songs are far from my favorite.
cliques whose members purposely tell others to get away. message board cliques are really boring so when they exist is just ruffles my feathers.
if either of the above breeds gets really upset when others tell them to back off or even apologize for offending, that’s annoying too.
the last bit of annoyance comes from people talking politics and assuming every other person around them agrees, as though there is no one cool enough to use the internet who is be holding opposing views. same regarding religion.

I swear I’m not thinking of any particular people, certainly not here. I have spent plenty of time on plenty of forums and I get to know how they go. I’m pretty flexible though, especially about first impressions. Sometimes people who are grumpy or rude at first end up being slightly endearing.

“Shut up, I’m taking a test.”
