Verizon IPhone - Is it worth it?

I am a new member, although have been a “lurker” for several months, enjoing CC - so many people on the same wave length. So the most important question is whether the IPhone is worth almost doubling the cell phone bill. I am a big fan of everything “I-” but when I went to the store to use my “New every 2”, they told me a few eye opening things: a) they are discontinuing “New every 2” - I have three months to use it up or loose the benefit, b) I have to not only add a data plan but also to discontinue my current phone plan and upgrade, c) they have other smart phone that are comparable to an “IPhone”. I am not a shopper so my big question… Should I just close my and leap or try to shop for something cheaper?

We mulled over choices for about a year before upgrading. Our main problem is that we have 6 on our plan and there is not an economical choice when it comes to 6. At any rate I can give a little information as we just switched over.

We decided to go with an iphone for my H and kids and I went with the droidX. Love, love, love the droid but I haven’t played much with the iphone. When you upgrade to any phone you will probably have to change your plan as the smartphones need a data plan. If you try and stay with your same plan you may not have many phone options as they seem to tie in alot of promotions when you upgrade.

Whether you need a smartphone is something you have to decide is worth the money. I don’t have any of the other gadgets but kids do and they seemlessly manage. We bit the bullet in letting them go for the expensive stuff because my H wants them to be on the cutting edge of technology plus they teach us everything about the phones anyway.

The reason my H went with the iphone is because the medical society is giving alot of free medical apps for his use and because we wanted to test out both phones so that when it is time to upgrade again do we stay with android technology or iphone.

On first impressions I liked the droidX and I think I still prefer it. The iphone is cool but there are so many free apps with the droid that I would have to pay for on the iphone. I liked texting on the droid better as well. It is bigger but I like the size for viewing anything from texts to google maps to youtube. Oh and the insurance is cheaper for the droid. There again it just boils down to choice and what you like better.

To me having the ability to do more than make phone calls is worth the expense especially when travelling. I love to pull up google maps when I’m in a new city and navigate my way around shops and restaurants etc…

Thanks, SweetTea. I never even thought about the Droid family mostly because I was enamored with the IPhone. How is it easier to text? What kind of Droid you have? There seems to be quite a few to choose from.

I am as nerdy as they come, but I just can’t justify the price. I have an envTouch with unlimited data plan, but it’s not an always-on smartphone. I can read my gmail, use facebook, browse the internet…but it’s $10/month data plan.

I would prefer a Droid to the iPhone, but will just let my ‘new every two’ expire I guess.

Well the onscreen buttons are smaller on the iphone and I kept pushing the wrong button. I am not a fast texter to begin with plus with my old eyes I found the droidX easier. I know you can turn it sideways but I tend not to. If you are a better texter than I then it probably would not matter.

My phone is the Droid X and there is also a global Droid X. I think there is another droid coming out but not sure when. At first I had liked the droid incredible but the X sold me. Probably if you did a side by side comparison you could see which you liked better. I believe there is a thread on this site about the two phones but I also went to different consumer sites to compare the two. Anyway I think both phones are great I just like the droid better. The iphone probably has this feature too but on the droid it will recognize names you type in.(I know it does the auto select words on both, I just didn’t know it would save the unusual spellings) I found out it saved my kids names(they are unusual names) so when texting I can hit the kids names when I’m typing out a message to someone and don’t have to type the long name. Like I said I have really done much with my H’s phone to see similarities and differences.

1) There was just a study in yesterday’s paper that the download speed on Verizon’s iPhone is about half what it is on AT&T. Also, slower than many of Verizon’s other phones.

2) Our computer guru said not to get a Droid if you have confidential communications. It is too open (since it’s relatively new) to viruses since anyone can create an app for it and there’s no QA, and it’s easy to hack. The iPhone is much more secure.
