Verizon Unveils Shared Data/Everything Plans

[Verizon unveils ‘Share Everything’ family plans for data | Mobile - CNET News](<a href=“CNET: Product reviews, advice, how-tos and the latest news”>CNET: Product reviews, advice, how-tos and the latest news)

So…is this going to make having data cheaper for anyone/your family??? Still seems steep to me, but I’m not real familiar with the amount of data you currently get for your data fee…

Definitely not for us. We’re happy with unlimited (though limited 4G) data on TMobile for less money. Just can’t get the iPhones, but I like Android better anyway.

Well not cheaper for us. Verizon hasn’t apparently figured out that D upgraded to a smart phone.

My DS and I are on verizon. He has a blackberry and I, according to Verizon, have a “dumb” phone. He has internet capabilities and has a data plan…I don’t. Cant figure out what this will do to our rates. Right now we pay about $135 amonth…it’d be a lot less if they stopped all those taxes they charge!

I’m curious to see how this works with company discounts. I currently have my own plan and it’s 60 dollars for the plan and 30 dollars for 4 gb of data. I get 21 percent off the 60 dollar plan, but not off the data… so it comes to 77, and it’s 88 after taxes. My bf currently pays 60 dollars for his plan, but has no data plan… so he comes to 60. He’s been looking at new phones but all the ones he likes require a data plan and he doesn’t want to pay more. If i’m reading this right, we could do a plan together of 4 gb data for 70, and then 40 per smart phone so 80 more, it would be 150… and then depending what kind of discount i got for work, it would probably come out pretty close to what we’re separately paying now, with him not having a data plan at all. Might be a good thing.

I am not sure that this is such a bad move, but maybe a bit pre-mature on Verizon’s part?

I bet it will be hard to find phones that do not use and almost require some type of data connection for basic functions in the near future. So they may be trying to get ahead of the curve on this process. And it will encourage more people to buy the smart phones, since they will have the data package anyway.

So if I am eligible for a phone upgrade under my New Every 2 on June 21st, I can keep my unlimited data…right? Looks like I will be RUNNING to get something on the 21st.

We’re also wondering the same thing as fendergirl, as my dad gets a corporate discount as well.

Yeah, looking over my family’s 5 phones - 3 smart (kids) 2 dumb -well, you know…

Two eligible for upgrade. Gonna have to figure it all out…

HGFM: my understanding is when you upgrade and use their discount, then you no longer get unlimited. The only way for you to keep unlimited data is if you were to buy your phone at full price.

Are they still charging $30 for their “free” upgrades? Obfuscation rules! And note: the term upgrade does not mean add a new level of service. It refers to your new phone. Yeah. And you get to commit to another two years.

Hugcheck-the last time I upgraded about 1.5 years ago, they only took $50-$100 off. So if it was an expensive phone, you still end up paying quite a bit of the difference.

oldfort: UGH. I’m looking around at maybe getting my own plan, as I’ll be making a bit more money as a grad student and it might be cheaper.

HGFM will be able to upgrade before June 28th and keep her plan. After June 28th, unless you pay full retail price for the phone, you need to change plans.

Oh and I recommend trying to get a phone through Amazon or Costco (if your family is a member) as it can be a lot cheaper than Verizon.

As a single person, this new plan blows. With my corporate discount I pay $70 a month for 450 minutes (which I barely use), 1000 texts which I use and unlimited data. The best I could do with the new plan is $85 with my discount and that’s only 1 gig of data. I normally use between 1 and 1.3 gigs a month.

Yes, what trojanchick99 says. My plan isn’t for unlimited voice because we never use all the minutes we have. I have a 700 minute plan and 5 phones on the plan–we never go over. We have unlimited text, because kids text, not call. New program has unlimited voice, unlimited text and very limited data. We will be giving up lots of data when the switch comes. Currently we have two phones on unlimited, one on 4gb and 2 “dumb” phones. If we go with the new plan, we will be paying a similar amount to get less data. we will have to pay close attention to data usage so we don’t go over. That’s a pain.

I will probably go out and get a new phone before the 28th so that I can keep my unlimited for another 2 years at least.

I’m curious to see how it all pans out… I have two phones with verizon - my personal which i have 4 gb of data and unlimited texts which go along with 450 minutes which I barely use for 88… and my corporate blackberry… I think the current bill on it is about 80 dollars a month… I have the bill sent directly to corporate… I don’t remember how many minutes I have but enough that I can dial in to meetings from my phone a few times a month as well as use it to talk occasionally and I know it has unlimited texts and a big chunk of data considering how much time it spends downloading my e-mail. I’m assuming companies get a big group discount.

S1 has spent all evening evaluating this and posturing how we need to pull the trigger to get him a smart phone before this goes into effect, as, by his calculations (which I won’t dispute) the combined plan will cost us more money. (now 2 smart/2 dumb phones; he wants this to change to 3 smart/1 dumb [mine!]). He’s now talking H into upgrading his smart phone into a 4G. (S1 is finishing a less than stellar first yr of HS…4q, however looking up, as he kicked it into gear to prove he’s smart phone worthy).

I feel happily oblivious without a smart phone. (do have a work blackberry that gets internet that I can google phone numbers and read news headlines…what else do I need?)

KLuge and VAmom, we are similar to you, but we have only 2 smart/3dumb. S1 has been holding off upgrading his iphone4 to the 4s because the 5 is supposed to come out. Handy for Verizon that the iphone 5 will be after this rate hike. S1 has unlimited and S2 had 4GB for $30 each. On the new plan we will pay 40 per smart and 30 per dumb…that is 170 right there, plus we need to buy at least 4gb data, less than we have now and I believe that will be $70…Total of 240. We pay about 195 now. Not counting taxes or discounts because who knows what they will be on the new plan. We have 700 minutes that we use about 450 of and they have unlimited text and use a LOT of texts.

Basically, if S1 upgrades his phone, or if any of us do–and with 5 lines somebody will have to, it will cost at LEAST 40 more.

I had been hoping to use sons old iphone to see if i want a smartphone after he got his new one. I thought I could try it for a month or 2 and not be locked into a data plan. Now, even if he upgrades before the change to keep his data, the second I put that old iphone on the plan I will have to add data and, whomp!, be sucked into the new pricing.

Charging $30 for a dumb and $40 for a smart…obviously we will all say, gee lets git us a smartphone…then we will need more data and Verizon wins again.

I am pretty mad. Of course S2 upgraded in March…for another 2 years, so how do we get out of this mess? We have 2 off contract and 2 that end in August and October. We could be done with Verizon without S2’s recent upgrade. Maybe we can take the 4 lines away to somewhere cheaper and it will work out…no, the min for a single line smartphone on Verizon is $90…

Not happy. Don’t know if S1 should settle for Iphone 4S before June 28…but one of our 3 dumbs may want to change, and that wouldn’t be fair to S1…

I’ll say it again…not happy.

The only good thing is that hubby bought me the 4G ipad in May. I thought it was dumb idea not to get he cheaper wifi, knowing I didn’t want to pay data…but the new play it would only be $10 to share…

I guess if people don’t want to do it they’ll go elsewhere. If Virgin mobile wasn’t on at*t’s network I’d do their unlimited prepaid each month it’s only like 35 dollars.

I was telling my mom today I wonder if this will stick, as Verizon is certain to lose a lot of business when people realize it won’t be cheaper for them. We will see.

Just doesn’t make sense to me as data can’t be all that expensive to maintain/operate…can it?

It’s ironic they’re coming out with this way to charge people more while the pre-paid folks are having ability to have iphones & androids & offer unlimited data at fairly reasonable rates. Will have to see how S analyzes all of this & makes a recommendation about what he & D should get.

We have 4 smartphones on our Data plan and 3 of them are on unlimited plans. I am not happy about having to give up our unlimited data. The article I read said that you can keep your unlimited data until you upgrade to a new phone. I just upgraded my phone so I am happy about that.
