Very complicated grammar question: Proceed at your own risk

Whistling ‘‘Beat It’’, I lifted the weights.

Whistling here is a Present participle(Present Participles always act as adjectives and modify nouns). Whistling here is NOT modifying ‘‘I’’ but is modifying ‘‘lifted’’(HOW lifted??? Lifted while whistling ‘‘Beat It’’).

Any explanations ??? I am COMPLETELY FLUMMOXED.

If whistling is a present participle then it is an adjective.

If Whistling is an adjective that modifies the noun “lifted,” then lifted is a noun.

If “lifted” is a noun, then there are no verbs in the sentence.

If there are no verbs in a sentence, then it is not a sentence.

(Hint: Lifted isn’t a noun)

Care to explain where you found this?

^ Well…(I have the SAME EXACT thoughts you have)

I found it in a GMAT book that is called MGMAT.

I trust this book. The problem is that it(MGMAT) explained this concept briefly.

ANY EXPLANATIONS???( I think I will die before I uncover all the ‘‘mysteries’’ of grammar.)
