Write short stories/poems as a hobby (though I’ve never done a competition before…)

…My parents got divorced between 9th and 10th grade and I switched schools in between…I don’t really want to make this an ‘excuse’ in my application but should I mention it?

I was wondering if there were any medium/small sized LAC’s in the northeast that I stand any chance of getting into (Wesleyan, Hamilton, etc.)? Or am I doomed for community college :frowning: ?

what school do you go to in NJ?

I dont think you can get into Wesleyan with your current stats, your GPA is just too low. Hamilton i dont know much about, but you might have a shot there. Do you have any idea what you rank in your class? Is there grade deflation?

Is your GPA weighted or unweighted? What is your SAT breakdown?
BTW, you are, by no means, mediocre.

West Windsor. It’s near Princeton.

I have no clue b/c our school doesn’t rank.

idk about grade deflation but we go by the 4.0 scale (4.0=A, 3.0=B, 2.0=C, etc… we don’t count +'s or -'s.)

Unweighted GPA.

lol. Thanks, I think…

Let’s talk about a few schools where I think you would have no problem at all in being accepted.

Indiana University–ranked as one of the top 10 business schools in the country (even higher in some business specialties areas–for example, in finance)
University of Arizona–one of the top three astronomy programs in the country–and also good in engineering, business, aeronautical engineering, and nursing
University of Cincinnati–absolutely fantastic performing arts/music school
Ohio State University–excellent biology/pre-med program
University of Colorado–great physics program and also an excellent astronomy program
Purdue University–ranked 7th best engineering school in the country–and top 3 in a few categories (like industrial engineering and agricultural engineering)
Embry-Riddle (Florida)–highly ranked aeronautical engineering and flight college–among the top 5 in the country per USNW
(all of these are tier 1/tier 2 national universities except Embry-Riddle–which is a master’s level school)

and, of course, there are many others. Don’t let the fact that others are going to better known schools discourage you. There are lots of excellent schools in the US–and not all require 4.0 GPAs with 2300+ SAT scores (as this website might lead you to believe). I’m not as knowledgeable about the LACs–but I’m sure there are good ones you qualify for as well.

As has been recommended numerous times on this site, check out the book “Colleges that Change Lives”, which has many LACs for students with your stats. Or look at them at www.ctcl.com. (Loren Pope also wrote another book, called “Looking Beyond the Ivy League” which may also help you.)

Another website to look at: www.collegesofdistinction.com

you have some great options. for english in the northeast, check out:
bard
clark
wheaton (ma)
skidmore
union
hobart
muhlenberg
ithaca

good luck!

Thanks for the support everyone! :)

Out of sheer curiosity, would schools like Hamilton be considered nearly impossible for me to get accepted to? (please be honest…)

No. they wouldn’t be near impossible for you. SAT’s and GPA are important, but not nearly as important as desire to attend that school. Trust me.
