Very sad news - Philip Seymour Hoffman dead at age 46

<a href=“Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead: Actor Dies At 46 In New York Apartment | HuffPost Entertainment”>Philip Seymour Hoffman Dead: Actor Dies At 46 In New York Apartment | HuffPost Entertainment; He was a magnificent actor. I’m so sad to learn of this.

He was an excellent actor… at the top of the field. The story I read on the New York Post site said police found a needle in his arm. So sad.

I am really struck by this news. I think he was one of those actors that “we” would have considered a legend in our time. RIP Mr. Hoffman. I sincerely hope you are at peace.

I’m very sad to hear this. He was a great actor. Leaves behind 3 young children.

A guy I follow on Twitter for college basketball interrupted his tweets today with: May you be in heaven a a full half-hour before Twitter knows you’re dead.

I thought that was pretty appropriate. Lots of stuff coming out about drug use; evidently he did rehab right after college, and was clean until last year, when he entered rehab again. He has three young kids, too.

Sad. Great Actor. One forgets just how many terrific films he appeared in…

<a href=“Philip Seymour Hoffman - IMDb”>http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000450/</a></p>

It is so sad. He was an addict in his twenties. He seemed to have beaten it. He’d stayed clean for over 20 years and then relapsed. My guess–total speculation but it often happens–is that he ODed by accident because he took the same “dose” he used to take. Once you’ve been clean for a long time, the same dose will kill you because you no longer have the same tolerance.

I will never understand why people do drugs. Particularly someone who has a great career, kids, money. It’s not like they don’t know the extreme dangers, after seeing others in the profession die in the same way. I just don’t get it.

He detoxed from heroin last May:

Very sad to read this. A phenomenal actor.

Addiction is a disease. Plain and simple. A horrible, horrible disease.

I am dismayed. LOVED him in ‘Capote’ and also in ‘Doubt’. Maybe he channeled Truman Capote a little too much… :(

I have a friend who is presently working on Hunger Games and she said she saw him on set just last week. She is wondering what in the world they are going to do now…

God, he was such a great actor.
State & Main, Almost Famous, Mr Ripley, Cold Mountain.
He will be missed.
He was also the best thing about the last Hunger Games movie.
:(

I thought he deserved the Best Actor In a Supporting Role Academy Award in 2009… but it was the year Heath Ledger died, so that just wasn’t going to happen.

SO sad.

One of my friends who lives in NYC just saw him on the street yesterday in the West Village.

I don’t understand addiction. How does someone stay clean for so long and then relapse? His poor kids.

Brilliant actor, I’d see whatever he was in, even if the movie didn’t get good reviews. Very sad.

What’s with all these heroin deaths? Is heroin becoming that prevalent? I hear of heroin addiction (and death) occuring more and more. So sad. Such a dreadful disease.

I’m glad to see that there are others who don’t understand the addictive personality because I don’t either. Especially for a guy who has been through the hell of detox- why fall back into that? Such as waste of a life- great actor, left behind a partner of 14 years and 3 young kids, not to mention the rest of his family…

Addiction is a beast. So sorry to hear. Great actor.
