VERY Small School...Chances?

I come from a very small high school in Wisconsin (only 125 in the entire high school).

Our school offers zero AP classes and has zero clubs (well…except pep club, but I’m NOT joining that). I exhausted our curriculum in both science and math after my junior year, so I’m taking indepedent calc and chem this year, both for no credit or grade.

*4.0 GPA (UW)
*5 credits of math (algebra 1, algebra 2, advanced math, geometry, calculus)
*5 credits of science (biology, chemisty, physics, anatomy and physiology, advanced biology)
*4 years of Spanish
*4 years of band (marching, concert, pep, etc…first chair clarinet for all four years…went to state solo/ensemble my soph. and junior years and most likely this year)
*4 years of varsity cross country (P.R. of 18:59…captain this year…our team went to state)
*3 years of varsity basketball (starting center…averaged about 10 PPG last year…captain)
*3 years of varsity baseball -counting this year- (3 year starting pitcher…2 year ace…around a 1.25 ERA last year…captain last year)
*3 years of NHS
*Went on Spanish trip to Mexico two years ago and going to Costa Rica next summer

*ACT - 33 (E-33 M-34 R-35 S-30 W-8)

I think that’s about it. What are my odds?

interesting candidate, they will have a tough time with you methinks

It will really help your cause if you plan on playing varsity athletics…are you?

No one can really assess your odds, because admission to Yale is so tough. That being said, you are a strong candidate (but so are many students out there).

I don’t predict chances, but the fact that you attend a tiny high school will not be an obstacle. Your application will be judged in the context of what is available to you at your high school.

Yeah, I’ll have 10 varsity letters from athletics when I graduate. Sports take up most my free time all year.

are you a guy or a girl?

If you’re a girl - that time is awesome and i would contact the x-c coach for recruitment
If you’re a guy - your times are not competetive for the collegiate level and there’s no hope for athletic recruitment.

academically I have no idea - and none of us do. You have an interesting case and I’m sure the adcom will take your school’s resources into consideration. You look solid otherwise.

The person plays varsity baseball. It’s a he.

Yeah, I’m a guy. And an 18:59 actually isn’t very good for a girl since they run only 4K…it’s alright for a guy; it averages out to like a 6:05 mile over 3.1 miles. I’m not built like the prototypical runner and my VO2 Max sucks (for those of you who know what that is) so I’m proud of my 18:59.

There are still cross-country races that run girls on a 4k? In Illinois, they changed in to girls running the same 5k around 5 years ago.

Yale Freshman here.

Yale will take all of this into consideration, I can guarantee that. I came from a school in a really small town in upstate New York, with about 125 in our class. And while we aren’t quite as small as you I was more or less in the same situation: a crappy school with few (we had 1) AP classes. But I did the best I could with what I had (and it looks like you did to, especially with 10 varsity letters, that won’t go unnoticed, I had 8)

I was the first kid from my school to go to Yale. Give the admissions department more credit. They’re smart and realize that we can’t have all gone to amazing private schools. I’d be optimistic, especially if you’re going SCEA (I did too)

The best of luck, and I hope to see you next fall.

Hi Bauman,
Just checking in on the XC PR. You should be proud of your PR, but you also probably know it isn’t at all fast enough to run in college. You do sound like a great guy, and the leadership on your teams is much more impressive than your time, so I’d emphasize that! Best wishes.

Yeah, I’m done running. I just posted my PR because I thought it was interesting. My leadership on the team was/is a lot more important

I have an essay that I wrote for Notre Dame that wanted to know how I was different from my peers. Since I’m religious, and ND is Roman Catholic affiliated, I have a paragraph about my faith and how that makes me different than other students. I really like this essay; do you think I should use it for Yale? Would anyone mind taking a look at it and giving me some input?

Of course, why wouldn’t you?

The point of your essay is to set you apart from all the other applicants. There are going to be a million other kids at the top of their class with high GPA’s and good SAT scores. You’ve get to make yourself stand out and show Yale that they have a reason to let you come there.

I’d consider myself a decent writer if you want me to take a look at it.

Hey I’m from a small Wisconsin school too! It’s actually not that small, and it’s a public school. However, our average ACT is like a 22 lol wondering if that’ll make my 2350 SAT look better.

^ Nicely done. You successfully hijacked someone else’s perfectly good chances thread and turned it into a personal bragging board using only the fact that you both live in Wisconsin and go to small schools as an excuse. Your scores don’t need to look any better. You could have at least followed it up with an attempt to contribute to the purpose of the thread.

bauman: come through in your essays and you have as good a chance as anyone. You’ve done brilliantly so far. Good luck!
