Vet Student Advise

I’ve been accepted to the following schools for Fall 2020:

Columbia School of General Studies

Cornell University

Syracuse University

College of William and Mary

Emory University

I am still waiting to hear back from

Georgetown University

Yale Eli Whitney

Brown RUE

I’m currently an active-duty soldier who will be ETS’ng this summer. I’m having a hard time deciding which school to attend and I was hoping I could get some insight for those who may have attended any of the schools.
I’m mainly looking for your views on your experience at those schools. I am especially looking for any experience in the following areas:

Major: Political Science.

Housing: I ABSOLUTELY NEED a single room. I’ve had horrible experiences with roommates and honestly can’t bear to experience it again. I can do with a private bedroom with a shared common area for the first year, but CAN NOT/WILL NOT be in the same room with another person. What are the apartments like? Can you choose preferences on what type of room and/or suitemates you can have?

Student life: Vibe of the school. Just a general student experience. I would also like to see your personal pros/cons of the school.

Gay Scene: I’m gay and a minority. What is the dating scene like? I’m male and 25 y/o.

Any insight you can provide will greatly help me in making my decision.

Thank You.

You might want to post on nontraditional students. I do not think most nontraditional students choose to live in dorms, but there may be helpful advice on that forum. I would expect finances and setting would be most important, whether you prefer a city with many other adults or an isolated college town. Very different types of schools on your list.

It sure sounds as if being in New York City would be a big plus. I would try to nail down what sort of housing is set aside - if any - for people enrolled in the School of General Studies.

Contact the housing offices and ask specifically about single rooms and housing for older students like you. Some institutions will allow older students like you to live in graduate housing.
