Veteran AS or BS degree?

Hello everybody,

I am currently an Active Duty service member working in the IT field. I wish to continue and pursue working in the IT field but was wondering if I should get a bachelors or if an associates will do just fine? My EAOS (Contract) will end in June of 2017 and I have already mapped out what I would do if I were to go to college.

I would attend Ohlone College (CC) and aim to get an Associates of Science in Computer Science

then transfer to California State East Bay (CSU) for a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science with the Network and Data Communications option.

On top of that I have 9 semester credits I have received from Central Texas College and planning on taking (hopefully passing) certain CLEP tests before my contract ends.

Should I use my 9/11 G.I Bill for my time at Ohlone or just save it for East Bay if I do end up going the BS route?

Thank you for your time.

First of all, thank you for your service.

Keep up with the CLEP tests, as they will help you with credits. You’ll need at least 60 semester units to transfer to a Cal State as a junior so you should look at attending Community College to complete your major’s prerequisites and GEs. I don’t know anything about the GI bill and how to maximize its benefits.

Contact each of the schools you hope to attend. Each should have a Vet’s office.

East Bay’s VA office may have more info about which benefit you should use so that you take advantage of what you rightly deserve.
