Veteran looking to get into SDSU??

Hey hows it going? I am currently in the US Army serving in Iraq but I ETS (separate) from the Army on feb 20th 2010 which means I plan on attending SDSU Fall 2010. My HS GPA is a 3.0 but my SAT scores were pretty low 1290 I believe it was. I know the SAT score is awful but I was very involved in my school, I played 3 sports, played guitar in the band, student council among others. I heard SDSU was a very veteran friendly school and I know my grades aren’t perfect but I know I am a harder work since I’ve been in the military. Are there any Vets on here who were in a similar situation and got into this school or a school like it? I am very afraid I’m not got going to get into a four year school because of my scores. my top choices are SDSU and FSU…I have a feeling I am out of my league with these schools? Will my veteran status help me get into SDSU?

Is the 1290 out of 1600? If so, you’re fine.

If not, I might consider retaking it. If you do well (1900+), I would strongly advise looking into Dartmouth. You’ll have to pull up your scores, and you’ll have to explain your 3.0, but Dartmouth is a very veteran-friendly school, and they give veteran applicants some slack in terms of numbers (SATs, GPA, etc).

Hillary, do you have actual experience with this at Dartmouth? OP was asking about SDSU. I agree he is fine if 1290 is out of 1600.

No, I don’t have personal experience; I am not a veteran who decided to apply to Dartmouth. Just because he’s interested in SDSU does not necessarily mean that he won’t be interested in Dartmouth. Isn’t the point of these fora to help each other out?

cavscout1303, thank you for your service. I can only suggest that you also look into the schools participating in the yellow ribbon program.

A recent thread asking a similar question to yours is here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/747183-college-admissions-veterans-angle.html?highlight=veteran</a>. There’s a link to cc’s separate vets forum within, and a thread with some info on the yellow ribbon program.

Good luck to you.

First, I think if you Have a 3.0 you don’t have to submit SATs at CSUs.

While it is true the former president of Dartmouth was committed to accepting a few vets each year, no one knows if that will be a consideration in the new regime. Regardless, Dartmouth would expect the candidate to have stats typical of their other students making it not a good possibility here. SDSU and others CSUs sound like a good bet, you might consider UC Merced too.

Hence the advice to “pull up your scores”
