Video Games Personal Essay

I’m a rising senior and currently working on my personal essay over the summer. I know what I want to do and I plan to talk about the intersection between my interests in fashion marketing and science. I have a lot of scattered ECs though so I was hoping to use an analogy to a video game to explain it. Almost like comparing my life to a video game with levels, achievements, worlds, etc. Is this a bad idea? I have no idea how to relate them otherwise.

There are few bad ideas. It’s all execution. So it can be great.

One thing not to do - regurgitate your ECs. They will already read about them.

That they are scattered does not matter. Too many think you need a theme.

I mean what does walking dogs at the shelter and being in band or working at an ice cream shop have to do with each other. Or Model UN , etc. Most don’t have themes - most are scattered - and that’s good - you tried new things.

A Yale admit by me wrote about the exhilaration of waiting for Papa John’s pizza delivery. Another local write about fuzz on the tennis ball.

John’s Hopkins used to publish an essays that work manual. Your essay can go in any direction you want.

Good luck.

You can write just about anything. If you actually play video games then this would make sense and a nice theme, if you will.

One of the best essays I read was about playing chess and each move represented something meaningful. She went to MIT.
