Video in lieu of $10 essay

Since we’re allowed to submit something other than an essay, and I have video production experience, I’m thinking about submitting a video. It wouldn’t be extremely long, but I know admissions people don’t have much time at all to review applications. Obviously going to a TV, sticking the DVD in the player and watching the video will probably take the admissions people longer than it would to read an essay. Do you think they have to time to watch a short video, or would it be best just to write an essay instead? If I were to submit the video, how long would you recommend it being?

Thanks for the help.

I remember at least one person (from CC) submitted a video last year - I think it’s an excellent way to avoid simply writing an essay. Playing a DVD really shouldn’t be a problem at all, but you might want to email the adcom for your state and make sure. As for length, don’t make them spend excessively more time on your video than they would on an essay. I would guesstimate ~5 minutes would be good, but thats just my guess…

The general rule when submitting multimedia response to the $10 essay is keeping it to a total of 5 minutes. The adcoms will listen to CDs, watching videos and dvds, checking out websites or powerpoint, but only if it takes no more than 5 minutes. That is generally how long they have to review the essays, so it is standard to keep the timing of the reads fair.

Hope that helps.
