So I have the choice to go to Michigan, Purdue, or Georgia Tech. I am going for Aeronautical Engineering, but I also want to continue to pursue Video Production/post-production classes. That being said, I have been unable to find much about any of the respective universities and their relative strength of video production courses. Can anyone share any insight as this will help with my choice?

Okay, you’ll need to speak to the departments directly, because I have no idea if you can make this work with the Aeronautical Engineering sked, but indeed there is a strong film department with excellent production courses in upper years. The department is called Screen Arts and Culture. You will have pre-req courses to take (one general film theory and then a basic production course, plus one additional one I think) before you will be ALLOWED into an upper year production course. So it might be tough to fit this into your schedule. However, if you’re quite good, you might be able to get special permission to attend upper year production courses on a case-by-case basis.

In addition, there are AMPLE opportunities to work in film production on the side, and there is open access (with certified training) to use multimedia editing suites right at the Duderstadt (right beside the ENG buildings on north campus). There are always calls for volunteers to work group projects – eg. M-agination group has entries each year for film festivals and produce several films for same.

For Michigan, call the SAC department – I believe the person in advising is (still) Mary Lou, who will meet with you if you take a campus tour. You should also know that Michigan is very well regarded for its screenwriting courses under the direction of Jim Burnstein, who is a seasoned Hollywood professional and instructor at UMich. So I feel UMich is actually a great fit for access to both aero eng plus film.
