Parents should be aware of this school’s lack of support for a student who suffered assault on their campus.
This is unbelievable. I just found and signed a petition for this guy to be expelled. Nice values there, Villanova.
If my daughter was looking at schools now, Villanova would be off the list.
From the article:
Prosecutors didn’t charge Polun or Eguiguren with any crimes.
If this is the case then Villanova really can’t be playing judge and jury outside the law.
At a MINIMUM this obviously violates their code of conduct and as such one would expect the university to discipline its students accordingly.
Sexual Misconduct Policy | Villanova University indicates that “Creating images, photography, video, written, or audio recording of sexual activity, undressing, and/or nudity, or distribution of such without the knowledge and consent of all parties involved” is a type of “sexual exploitation” (rather than “sexual assault”) that is prohibited.
Importantly Villanova policy prohibits “Sexual Misconduct” and “Sexual Assault”. This student should have been dismissed. The fact that he wasn’t is terrible. It’s not too late to do so IMO. Under no circumstances should he walk. With the current news coverage I strongly suspect he will not walk.
Thank you for posting this- people need to be aware that not only does Villanova not protect victims of sexual assault from all the perpetrators, but they shame and blame the victim on technicalities. Very disgusted with Villanova. Educational, moral, spiritual and religious hypocrisy at its finest. Villanova do better!
Universities have their own processes, policies and punishments for student misconduct. You are correct in that the university is separate from the criminal process but universities have the autonomy to handle misconduct within the school setting. Take cheating for instance, students can be expelled for cheating but they aren’t arrested. Often times you see this go the other way, where the university issues punishment like separating students and/or expulsion where there is no criminal process for the assault. Sad.
Update: the university sent a note to all students in which they took no responsibility for their horrendous failure and said they were “working to address the situation” so the survivor can fully participate in commencement.
To which I say - HUH?
So disappointed in Villanova.
Subsequently the attorney for the student who filmed the assault said the student who filmed the video has decided not to walk. That’s good I guess. But way too little and way too late.
So disappointed in Villanova.
So surprised and disappointed in Villanova but glad that the victim will not need to celebrate her graduation alongside that student!
