My daughter has been accepted to all three universities and doesn’t know which one to accept. Time is running out. She received scholarships to both NYU and St. Lawrence (for 12,500 based on merit) but the other grants were based on FAFSA and don’t amount to much anyway. I would like to know what anyone knows about these schools liberal arts programs. I know what I have read about them on CollegeBoard.com but I want to know the REAL DEAL about recent experiences from anyone who has gone there or who might be going there.

I go to NYU, feel free to PM me specific questions. As for liberal arts programs, NYU is pretty strong in the liberal arts, but “liberal arts” refers to a lot of majors, all the humanities and social sciences. In CAS, our liberal arts school, the strongest majors are Econ, Math, Philosophy and Journalism.

Look, your daughter’s going to get a decent education at all 3, Villanova and NYU are probably the more “elite” schools. Don’t know much about Lawrence, but Villanova and NYU are completely different atmospheres. Villanova is a Jesuit school, beautiful campus, very small and traditional, more of a community feel. NYU is large, no campus, in Manhattan, it’s for students who are more independent rather than traditional. Your daughter should be able to narrow it down just by that.

Does she want the massive NYC school with a more “unique” environment (definitely not for everyone) or smaller Pennsylvania school with a “traditional” environment? (closer to typical college experience). I suggest you visit both if you haven’t already…good luck.

Villanova is probably not a good idea, especially if your daughter is not religious. I believe most if not all Jesuit/Christian schools have a core course on theology/bible study respectively. I never heard of St. Lawrence but with the “St.” it’s definitely a Catholic school.

I would go with NYU although I go to NYU myself. The thing is I think religious schools have a restricted view based on their “liberal” religious views. NYU is a private school with students from many backgrounds and religions (including atheists) and therefore not restricted to any one view. Besides that, there’s NYC which has a very diverse cultural background.

St Lawrence in NY is a small liberal arts college and is nondenominational. It is named after the St Lawrence River which is nearby. I grew up in NYC so I am familiar with NYU. It all depends on your D. Will she be able to handle being in a big city with lots of students . Or does she need more one to one and smaller classes. My daughter was in the same situation deciding between American and St Lawrence and she went with the latter due to the scholarship she received and the smaller campus. We also visited Villanova and something about it turned her off so she did not apply.
