Wow - didn’t expect that. I know they have said the last 2 years that RD was being used just to fill openings …. but I never expected it to that level. I will be curious how many total applicants they got this year when it is officially released.
My personal opinion, with how late VT EA comes out and the fact they are treating it as their main pool of applicants, they should change the name of EA to RD and then since they want a later deadline option call it Regular Decision 2 or something that will key people better in to it being after the initial large round of acceptances.
Wow. I know they say RD is just to fill up the empty spots, but that’s really incredible. It’s going to be interesting when the final stats come out for this year.
I agree with this. I think they should actually rethink their whole schedule, but if they aren’t going to do that, they at a bare minimum need to come up with different names for their different decision plans. There is a widely accepted understanding of what terms like “Early Action” and “Regular Decision” mean, and considering how much information students and families have to take in during the application process, I think they are increasing confusion.
No sour grapes when I say this, by the way. My daughter got in. We were all excited, but with each day, it’s becoming more apparent just how fortunate we are.
Thanks for posted and sharing your context. I’m a little frustrated that some of what’s starting to happen is that people who are frustrated with their Tech news are not only sharing their frustration, but doing so in a way that bashing other schools. Virginia has so many fantastic options! Many of the students reading these forums will be heading to one of these great options that don’t happen to be Tech next year, and they are going to go on to have a fantastic and rewarding experience. Tech fans get frustrated when they sense people feel like it’s a poor substitute to UVA–don’t make the same mistake when talking about other VA in state options in relation to Tech.
@Lilmelo Actually I was not talking about you . Forgot that was your situation . There were at least 2 at my sons school that got WL at JMU but got into VT and to be honest I’m more “Salty” about those kids who are almost overqualified that should have been admitted but because of there major were not (my child was WL but is not one of those) I get it but it really just doesnt make sense And you really can’t guarantee that that’s why you didn’t get in because of no essay.
@napolia i am absolutely not bashing JMU it’s a great school and my son got in there although he will be going OOS. All I’m saying if you look at CDS from past years the stats from JMU do not match up with VT.
I think next year more kids will apply ED to VT for sure and I agree if they accepted no students RD, they need to revamp their admissions . Either change dates or do away with ED would probably work better
UGA which is highly competitive has EA where they defer most and then RD.
How far lagging is VT’s schedule in their admissions process? My son was accepted at 2 Service Academies (which are notorious for not being in any rush to make appointment decisions) significantly before hearing from VT on February 21st. At the point he was accepted at VT, the luster of potentially being a Hokie had long since worn off. The good news is it likely opens up an SOE spot for another deserving WL’er.
I haven’t seen anyone posting results from RD so I didn’t think they were out yet. Just wondering if they are done with RD and can start moving on to the waitlist??
@5OnTheHill RD decisions were announced on the 5th. The only chance that a student is taken off the wait list before the May 1 matriculation deadline is if all offered students within that specific major are accounted for by matriculation or declined offer prior to the deadline.
@5OnTheHill Looking back on prior waitlist threads, it seems like the earliest they pulled students was in the last week of April. Last year there were a couple posters around 4/29 who claimed they were pulled, but on April 30th admissions sent an email to all students who had opted to remain on the waitlist telling them that no one would be pulled off.
Perhaps the question from the guidance counselor was specific to a major (Engineering, for example) and it was true for that major? Just thinking out loud.
Or perhaps the info came from a student who heard it from a parent of another student, who’s neighbor knows the guidance counselor? It’s interesting to me that there seems to be such willingness by HS guidance dept. staff to spread information to students/parents so quickly when they have myriad other issues to contend with each working day - in another thread we were led to believe that a guidance staffperson jumped on VT admissions stats within the first 4 hours of their 1st working day after EA admissions results and then immediately shared with students and parents of all that were waitlisted. @VirginiaGirl01 and @HokieCrazy are probably on to something, or most likely it was a case of “I heard…”.
FWIW, my D said all the RD applicants she knows from her school (in state) were waitlisted to VT…including a girl with a 1580 SAT/4.5 GPA who is considering MIT. She feels increasingly fortunate to have been accepted, and grateful she applied to a non-engineering EA. She has decided to attend VT.
They may have had many kids from ED and EA that already quickly committed and had a feel for that so had to be cautious with accepting too many people in regular decision.
