Virginia Tech plans to add an AI review of the essay and also the EA deadline is earlier than previous years. Details below ..
Anyone know if the notification date for EA will also change? I couldn’t find it on their website. Previous years, with an EA deadline Nov 15, notification was mid Feb.
Thank you! I missed that!
Anyone submit app yet? Did so on Monday and now its Friday… no follow-up yet to set up a portal. anyone else have a long delay like this?
Interesting that you haven’t received any email confirmation to set up a portal and STAR. That makes me nervous about S26’s timeline to submit his VT app!
This may be a stupid question, but I’m looking at the portal and I don’t see anything about self reported test scores or a link to report them. Does anybody know how this works if you chose to have them used. My kid reported his score on his common application and said yes to them being included. The only things on his checklist are the App and the STARS. Just making sure he didn’t miss anything. EDIT: In case anyone else is wondering the same thing, I just looked at their website. In order for scores to be viewed, you can report them on STARS, on the Common App, or upload a score report in the portal.
I believe virginia tech uses STARS which allows you report both courses and scores. Even if you use common app they will still want you to use STARS after submission, if I remember from last year. It used to be called SRAR when my kids applied.
it came in 5-6 days post submission. That seemed a bit long. But all good now.
My S submitted his application (finally) on October 29 and received portal info and STARS login info the next day. He submitted the STARS (finally) today.
My S self-reported his SAT scores on the Common App and on STARS. Does VT also need an uploaded score report in the portal or scores sent from College Board? I was confused about what was highlighted in yellow on STARS.
Reporting on the STARS is what he needs to do. But he needs to check off that he wants VT to use them. I think that’s a drop down question on the homepage under VT.
According to this article they use AI to read the essays. Historically the virginia tech essays have been mentioned as having a big impact in their admission decisions.
I heard an interview with their admissions director. He said they are still using a human reader for first review. The AI replaces the 2nd reader that they had been using. But if the AI and the human scores are significantly different, it will get kicked to another human reviewer. They are doing this to try to get their EA results out earlier. Historically, their EA results had come out a lot later than other colleges.
You are right. More details in the link below. Unrelated to this, my kids found several essays with 120 word limit restrictive when they applied a few years ago, maybe it has changed.
“The new essay review process replaces the previous system, in which each essay was initially scored by two human reviewers, with a model that includes one human reviewer and one AI reviewer. Under the previous process, if the two human reviewers’ scores differed by more than four points on a 12-point scale, a third human reviewer was brought in to evaluate the essay and resolve the discrepancy. In the new process, that discrepancy threshold has been lowered to two points to ensure the highest levels of accuracy.”
Any ideas when EA decisions are coming?
February. End of January if we’re lucky. Hoping now that they’re using AI things will go more quickly.
My daughter is a freshman at VT and I read somewhere that Admissions said they are shooting for end of Jan this year because they know that the EA decisions (Feb. 15) were much later than other schools last year.
