Virginia Tech Early Action for Fall 2024 Admission

My son applied to VT around 11/10 and got accepted in the first round to Neuroscience. 3.82 UW, 1460 SAT, 3 AP 5’s, 3 AP 4’s, Varsity Baseball and Golf, DECA, youth group, job, etc…

Yeah, who knows how they do it, it is certainly very frustrating for everyone who has not heard yet. I wish everyone who is still waiting good luck!

Who knows how they do things, my son applied early and was admitted in computer science/engineering but who knows why he was part of the 25%. My wife seems to thinks it is an indication that he is a strong applicant and the early acceptanace shows that the school had no doubts about his application. I personally have no idea why he was included in the 25%…while is academic profile is good and fits well within VT’s academic profile, his record isn’t so strong that it would have stood out as being super exceptional, espeically among the applicants to the engineering school. For instance, he got rejected for computer science and engineering by Purdue, which did not surprise me since I thought Purdue was probably a reach since it is a top 10 engineering school. (VT is a very good school but not nearly as competitive as Purdue in either computer science or engineering).

Yes. Can we infer anything from that?

Are schools moving away from Deferrals? My son has an equal # of deferrals to acceptances. Deferred by some “safeties” and admitted to his “reach”.

Does anyone have a date for the next batch of answers? I thought I read somewhere that it was this week?

We can HOPE that we hear this week, or next or the week after, but there is no confirmed message from Tech saying they will release additional batches prior to the “Late February” they are publicizing.

I thought I heard there might be another “25%” in late January, but I looked back on this thread and saw that was just someone’s speculation. I agree that VT hasn’t suggested there would be another release before late February.

Gosh, that’s dreadful. We applied EA and to a lot schools that are far away and too expensive (time & $) to tour without an acceptance. Now with acceptances happily coming in we are booking flights. Also my son is in conversations with coaches, booking nights over with the team and skating for Prospects Day. The longer a college waits to let us know, the further down the list they fall. If timing wasn’t an issue (and it’s not for some applicants), then we would have applied RD.

I guess I read the FAQ on the first round of offers to suggest there could be additional rounds before the end of February. The initial email on Dec. 21 also seemed to suggest additional rounds. But it is all speculation until something comes from VT Admissions.

  1. How many rounds of decisions will be released and when will the next round be released?
We do not have a set number of rounds of decisions that we anticipate to release at this time. We will send another email when we plan to release additional decisions to keep you and your family members informed of what to expect as we move forward.

I agree that they leave open the possibility of another release before late February. The comment about it happening in late January was pure speculation though. But it makes nice symmetry to release on 12/21, late Jan and late Feb.

What?! Logic and sensibility?? Not in this process!

Yeah let’s not get too crazy here!

For EA VT accepts, did you all get to apply for Admitted Students Day? Is that the same thing as Hokie Focus? Website says check back soon:

Still waiting over here for an EA decision…

My son will be attending admitted student programs at Pitt and Penn State in the coming weeks. Hopefully, we will be able to add Hokie Focus to our calendar for April.

Unfortunately the VT admitted student days are not until April 6 & 7, I feel like my D will want to make a decision before then. We have not visited yet but I went with my older daughter who ended up choosing Pitt.

I really think VT has miscalculated and/or mismanaged their admissions process for EA. My son had 4 EA admissions before Christmas. Two more since then. Waiting so long to hear from VT after knowing that they somehow were able to reach out to 25% of applicants before the holidays (but not providing more concrete updates to other applicants) just leaves a bad taste. Plus applicants emotionally move on. It’s just strange to me how VT would undercut itself.

Right? And if the matriculation rate of those EA applicants accepted before Christmas is higher than the EA applicants who are now apparently waiting until at least mid-February (per rumor mill), I bet the admissions office will applaud themselves on being so on target. It won’t occur to them that the rest of the EA applicant pool was turned off by the process and timing, impacting matriculation.

I have a friend who is a HS college counselor and they tell me that VT admissions is a hot mess.

Do you care to elaborate? Anything else you can tell us? Thanks

I agree that VT miscalculated, but I do want to be precise about what they said about the 25%, which was “About 25% of our first-year offers have been released with this round.” They did not say that they responded to 25% of applicants. I’m not smart enough to figure out what percentage of applicants they actually responded to.
