My wife said that the Greek Housing/Community appeared to be the weakest of all the schools we looked at, as the Oak Lane community, isn’t like other places. However, a lot of Fraternities have off-campus houses. Also, I saw a recent post on reddit about someone looking for dance/clubs, and people responded that Blacksburg is more of a bar scene…
I have an engineering kid at VT and he’s had plenty of time to party, join a frat, be active in a few other clubs, play rec sports, attend lots of football and basketball games and maintain a good GPA. There is always something to do, and the food is great!
love to hear that! Did he rush freshman year?
Engineering at UW is very intense and part of the picture is you have many, many very aspirational people from all over the globe who are 100% when it comes to their classwork. My bro graduated comp sci from there and was in a fraternity (which was really fun, btw) but to compete against the others who were not social and who stayed up all night working made it hard to graduate in the top percentages of the class. I think he had to just settle for B’s and maybe a few C’s. He still got a job and would not do it differently. IMHO your DS should spend some time there if admitted before he decides.
Is there any chance of merit aid out of state? I’ve heard of someone getting like 5K I think, and I’m guessing that would be about the cap?
VT isn’t known for being generous with aid. I have a freshman, and I know of several of us OOS that received $3K, but I don’t know of anything more than that. There are more scholarship opportunities for upperclassmen in specific majors. She submitted the scholarship app for this coming year, no idea yet if she continues to receive any merit aid, but we aren’t counting on it.
My OOS junior engineering student got $3k her first 2 yrs. For comparison, she was offered $23k from Ohio State, 18k from UConn, and 8k from Pitt. Luckily, my employer pays most of her tuition so VT was doable. She got $7500 this year from her major Dept (& that other 3k disappeared). She loves Tech!! Good chance her brother will end up there next year, assuming he gets in.
Any pointers that decisions come out this Friday (Feb 7)?
Haven’t heard anything new. Hoping so🤞
If they follow the patterns from the last few years, it will be announced the day before or morning of. I saw last years (I think) IG post that was a picture of balloons that just said “5:00”
I suggested this earlier but I think one reason for the delay is that applicants are (usually) admitted by major, and I suspect individual colleges/departments/programs are coordinated with re: applicant stratification and admissions decisions.
My impression from reading the internet (hah) is that ‘most’ of the incoming class comes from EA cycle, RA is more like space-available for late applicants and borderline candidates.
I saw the announcement from last year the day of decisions on 2/2. The year before they announced on insta on 2/17! I hope it is this Friday but not very optimistic. Hope I am wrong.
Regarding admission by major, UMD, UW-Madison, and NC State do it as well but their EA application deadline is Nov 1. So maybe one can ask why VT has the Nov 15 deadline to start with and why they do not do the Nov 1 deadline like most other schools.
Perhaps trying to offset UVA by ~2 weeks?
My thoughts:
- Perhaps they want to give financial aid info with the offer letter, this takes more time (Clemson isn’t releasing merit scholarships until the end of March, but sent out decisions mid-December);
- Hopefully they don’t want to defer as many kids as other schools do. UT Austin had an app deadline of 10/15, released decisions on 1/15, but deferred at least 80% of the kids with the next decision release date of 2/15;
- They clearly encourage students to apply EA because RD is only to fill up any remaining spots and there is no guarantee there will be any spots left. It’s almost like EA is regular decision and RD is more like a waitlist. I bet more schools will go back to ED and RD only. The UC schools and UWash don’t have EA already and you have to wait until March for their decisions. So many kids got deferred at the better schools it’s almost like there wasn’t an EA for them anyway.
- We liked the 11/15 app deadline. VTs essays were very different and needed extra time to work on. And it gave my D25 one more opportunity to take the SAT in November.
Has anyone logged into the application portal and gotten an update verifying name etc. and seen a VT email address added? I wish I took a screen shot so I could better describe
Not here
We saw the prompt for an update verifying name and VT email.
we saw a 7 or 8 digit number @vt.edu.
Where did you all see this?
It was the landing page when I logged in
