Virginia Tech Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

That does tamp down the anxiety even more, @OctoberKate . Thank you.

My lesson here is to just wait. Trying my darnedest to not overthink, and just let the news play out as it will. (Picture here Master Shifu from Kung Fu Panda as he repeats “inner peace, inner peace” as his ear twitches in agitation :grimacing:.) May 1 will arrive, eventually, with or without my angst over where S25 lands.

As long as they have a great place to land, the where really doesn’t matter.

There’s likely many schools where any student can excel and have a wonderful experience.

So hopefully that school exists - and if it doesn’t, make sure your student is applying to one just in case VT doesn’t come back as you hope.

As they say, hope is not a plan.

Best of luck to your student. They’ll likely excel wherever they land - VT or otherwise.

I agree. The parents (mostly us moms) stress way more about housing than the kids do. Mine (now a senior Hokie) would have been way down on the list if she hadn’t found a roommate who had E.D. (which was still an option then) and who was higher up on the list. They got an A/C dorm, which was a plus, but the rooms were very small. She did the no A/C thing last year in her sorority house and it’s really not a big deal. They make it work and everyone survives.

People seem to forget that VT is a state university, so the dorms just aren’t going to be Club Med-level. Not to worry - there are many new, fancy (expensive) choices in off campus apartments!

If they don’t get the invite as incoming freshmen, they will get an invite after the first semester if their GPA’s meet the standard for the honors program. VT doesn’t seem to have a rhyme or reason as to which incoming freshmen are given invites, so don’t feel defeated if your student doesn’t initially get one.

RE: the scholarships and/or honors college… We completely missed the scholarship deadline last year, which I find it strange they ask you to apply for scholarships when you don’t even know if you were accepted. But frankly, your odds of a VT scholarship are pretty low. She was accepted into the HC (she found that out in late Feb, even though she was accepted in last years late Dec wave), but after going to an info session at Hokie Focus, she decided it wasn’t for her. They mentioned their scholarships during the info session. I can’t remember the exact stats now, but they only issue a few HC scholarships for hundreds, if not thousands, of HC applicants. There are HC requirements (one class in particular needs to be taken your first year), and several projects. DD decided she rather use her time to double major, participate in clubs, rec sports, etc. As CollegeNerd point out, even if they don’t get in, they could be invited later. Of course there isn’t a one size fits all, and no doubt it’s wonderful for some, but candidly, I seem to hear of more Hokies that decline the HC offer than accept it.

It was my understanding that the HC scholarship submission isn’t required for HC acceptance. My kid checked the box for HC consideration when they applied, but didn’t end up writing the essays for the scholarship b/c there were too many unknowns at this point.

Yeah my DD submitted honors scholarship essay and separate stamps essay last night. And then aren’t there alumni scholarship essays due later in the month? So many essays for VT! I wish scholarship essays were after knowing if you’re in.

Please note the email we got was for my S25 to apply for the scholarship not an invite to the Honors program. I don’t think it has anything to do with being invited into the Honors Program just an opportunity to apply for a scholarship in the Honors Program. I am assuming everyone that checked the box for consideration for Honors got the email. The weird thing is when my S25 is logged into the scholarship portal it does not show the scholarship but if you sign out it does. Even weirder is that it shows if you use the direct link in the email. I am not sure if that is intentional?

Yeah that is the frustrating thing. So many to do at all the schools before being notified.

Really hoping for 1/15!!!

Does anyone remember if there were any “tells” on the VT portal last year? If there are any decisions going out next week, maybe we would see something happening on the portals by Monday. Wishful thinking!!

I have a freshman… Last year was a bit strange, so it’s hard to compare. They released a group of decisions in Dec, a few days before Christmas. We weren’t even expecting it; I saw a friend post her daughter’s acceptance on FB, so I told my D she may check her email. It was a bit of a surprise to get notified that early, but they were one of the few schools that never said when they’d release decisions last year. There was all sorts of speculation on the reason they released part of the decisions early. I’m not sure there was logic besides they were applications they already processed, but it seemed to create confusion. They later released the rest in early Feb, and I believe they announced a few days ahead of time on social media the decisions were coming. I’m pretty sure they released the rest of EA decisions on Fri 2/2 last year. I remember it being a week behind UNC & NCSU - and those schools released the last Fri in Jan (it’s always on Fri for them).

Edit to add: I looked on IG…they didn’t announce a few days ahead a time, but on Fri 2/2 they had a post that said “5:00” and then there was a 2nd post that said “Check your Portal”.

Last year, they unexpectedly released about 25% of early action decisions on December 21 at 5 pm, and as I said in a previous post, admissions told me that it was totally random and didn’t mean anything if you heard early versus later. My guess is that they released some early because that was the time that early decision would normally be released, and this was the first year they didn’t have early decision. They probably needed to gauge how many students accepted the offer, so that they had a better idea how many more students they could take. Around 2019, they had too many accepted students say yes, and had freshmen housing issues as a result.

For that December 21 release, they sent an email a little after 4 pm that day saying that some decisions were coming at 5:00 pm. While it was great for the students who got to hear early, it creating unnecessary ill-will with the students who had to wait.

They said the rest of the decisions would be released by late February. I called them on January 31 for an update and they were still saying “late February.” Then on February 1, they sent an email out at around 4:00 pm saying results were coming February 2 at 5:00 pm. And yes, on February 2 at 5:00 pm, the rest of the decisions were released.

Regular decision was released on February 23 at 5:00 pm.

Any update on when the decisions might. Is it still mid-February? Like Feb 15th? Patiently waiting…so nervous!

Was anyone able to join the IG live this past week with admissions people discussing the RD round? I was not but was hoping to get on to see if they mentioned anything more concrete about notification date.

I was able to listen to parts of it and the highlights were: it will definitely not be January for EA decision and it will be a tbd February date. Explanation of why they do notifications later than other schools was to allow them to also send the financial aid info along with the decision. The questions being posed were 90% related to EA. It’s also my kiddo’s first choice so feeling the stress too.

To bad most of us won’t get any financial aid then unsubsidized federal loans. So surprising they would say that.

Thanks so much for the info. At least we know it won’t be this month. Good luck to our kiddos. The wait continues.

Why is EA so late???

Because VT wants us all to go vaguely insane waiting? No? It’s not that?

No idea why it’s so late, but I don’t like it. The only reasons I can think of start to get conspiracy theory-ish and I don’t want to be that person. I’m sure they get a huge number of applications, but no reason they couldn’t hire more readers like other schools must have done to work through applications in a timely fashion.

Technically UVA is similar so it may be a Virginia thing. At the end of the day no one needs to make a decision till May. We just go insane and for us we want to coordinate trips to our top schools so we can make a final decision. That’s where the late decision hurts.
