Hey guys, I am going to Tech in the fall and want some insight on the parking, like is the VT permit worth it, how far are the lots from the dorms? Would it be cheaper to park off campus? And if so what are the options?
Hey - VT parent here. So, no real off campus options unless you’re living in an apartment complex. There is plenty of parking on campus for residential students in the “Duck Pond Lot”. It’s located on the residential side of campus and is a relatively short walk from the dorms on that side of campus. Note that on home football game weekends, all student cars have to be moved to a farther lot called “Chicken Hill”. Usually you have to start moving them on Thursday of game weekends and can move back on Sunday. There is plenty of parking on Chicken Hill but it’s farther. If you want to have your car (as many students do), the permit is worth it. Residential permits don’t sell out so you can always wait and decide once you’re at VT.
Once you live off campus, you need a commuter parking permit, and those spots are harder to find and are usually a lot farther from the academic side of campus. You can enter the lottery each year for the Perry Street Garage, which is a golden ticket, if you can get it. Many off campus students take the buses to campus.
Here is a map. If you zoom in you can see the red lots, which anyone can park in.
