Virginia tech vs. American University

None of these schools were my first choice and frankly, I am already planning to transfer (I know I will need high stats to transfer).
This is a very hard decision for me because I do want to study STEM but I am still undecided… like I might go into public policy, and law idk… I am a very undecided student.

They both gave me basically a full ride (i have to take out like $2000 in loans).

They are both ranked the same… similar type of education.

What I hate about Au:

  • The students
  • Lack of STEM programs

What I hate about Vtech:

  • Very rural
  • Not very strong in STEm

What I love about Au:

  • It is in the city
  • It feels more relaxed than vtech

What I love about Vtech
- The students ( I have so many friends there already)
- The tight community in general

So I am truly stuck, I did every trick in the book by doing pro/con and speaking with alumni and such but I just can’t choose. What do you all think?

I meant not very strong in subjects other than STEM and buisness for Vtech! Sorry!

At the end of the day, the people you are with has s huge impact on your happiness. Since you like VTech, go there. You may be pleasantly surprised and if you want to stick with your initial STEM choice, you’ll be in the right place.

I don’t think you can hate all of the students at American. Perhaps the reputation or a few on a tour day. Like any large population of people you will find great ok and not so great people. My guess is that it should not be a huge factor. If you choose to go there please update this and tell us about your great group of friends you’ve made since enrolling.

And I bet you don’t end up transferring from either school once you go. But good luck in either case. It’s actually a privilege to go to either but tough to see except in the rear view mirror.

A full ride scholarship to VTech and you want to turn it down…so you transfer for the privilege of spending $70k on a bachelors degree at a private university? Are you freakin’ nuts?

That’s kind of like getting a brand new Lexus and giving it back so you can pay for a BMW for $70k plus interest because it has better gas mileage.

@coolguy40 @privatebanker @gardenstategal Thank you so much for your advice. @coolguy40 I got full ride from both of the universities. I decided that I will go to Virginia tech because even though it is in the rural area, I enjoyed my time there and loved speaking with the students. Thank you so much for the advice

Awesome choice. Sky is the limit for you if you stay focused

@privatebanker thank you so much! I am really excited! As a first-generation student, I don’t know what to expect but I know that I will work twice as hard as I did in HS so I can go beyond Bacholrate degree  Thank you again for the advice

Best of luck! I’m not usually one to sugar coat my opinions, but it sounds like you made a great choice
