Virginia Tech vs. Michigan State U (Which is better shool?)

“Everyone knows about VTech’s tragedy.”

-Well, since you speak for everyone, I guess I have no choice but to believe what you say, right?

“But how does it help the school and the kids there now,”

-I’m on CC; I’m not all that concerned with “helping” people in the school now, just with those who are considering it for the future. While that may seem harsh, that is why I’m in this forum - not to make nice with people at Virgina Tech.

“Your stance seems more akin to rubbing it their faces rather than allowing the community to heal”

-That’s absurd. This is a college admissions website, is it not? My stance is, and always has been, that what happened at that school four months ago has affected how many view it, and as such, prospective students should, at the very least, be mindful of it.

“One deranged nut with a gun, like the one in Blacksburg, could pop up on any campus and to push the argument that there’s something inherently wrong with VaTech because this nut happened to enroll there, when he could have pulled off the same carnage at most any large university”

-I’m not saying that VTech is inherently prone to having people commit murder there - that would be ludicrous (however, it could be argued that its location in Virginia allowed the shooter to obtain a gun more easily, but, yet again, I’m not even saying that much). What I am saying, for the fifth time, is that people should be mindful of what happened when they apply to the school. If I planned to enroll in a school where 33 people were murdered a few months ago - many of whom were sitting in class- then I would most certainly want to look into how the school responded to the situation, and how it has changed its policies since then.

I will say, also, that all prospective students should at least look at crime/emergency statistics when they plan to apply to a school.

-You are free to think whatever you like about anything else, but if you disagree with this point, well then, that’s just too bad I guess.

The longterm impact to students going there this year will be near zero. A major midwest school had a shooting less than a decade ago. Hardly anybody could even name the school without looking it up today.

We toured VT last Monday, the first day of classes. Some thoughts to add to this discussion:

this was our 5th and last school tour and it was the largest tour group we have been a part of. (4 of the 5 schools were as large in size as Tech) The auditorium was packed with kids who want to go there. 4 tour guides- probably 30-40 people in each of their groups

we were told that for the Fall 2007 semester the college actually had more kids want to come to VT than they had planned for. They had to really come up with some creative dorm accommodation situations to handle all of the new freshmen. They did not go to their waitlist at all.

everyone we saw on campus that day seemed so happy to be back. VT tshirts, orange and maroon everywhere you turned. This school is really a part of a special community that you just “feel” when you are on its campus. I think that anyone who is applies to Tech and visits leaves with that feeling, not one of fear or worry. They are a tight bunch those Hokies.

KandKsmom, Did you tour the math emporium at VT? This is what turned my S off from VT. He prefers classroom taught courses vs online. I was wondering what the students really thought about it.

momhippo, no we didn’t tour the math emporium but I have heard about it from parents of kids who go there. My neighbor’s son goes there and he has said that he doesn’t mind it, but I can see why some kids would be turned off (I would be as well). VT’s size is a (negative) issue at our house, too, and is keeping the school from being among his top two choices. (The strange thing is he has UGA at number one and although it is as large, he claims it didn’t “feel” as big to him and had a better “vibe”. Go figure)
