VIRMP Match

A big day for many veterinary students is coming March 4 - Match day. 4th year students who want to continue with internships and interns applying for specialty residencies have submitted their rankings and waiting to find where they will be for the next 1 to 4 years. This is my son’s first year applying for the match for a SA rotating internship. He applied to 10 academic internships. He had interviews or chats with 5, and received a great fit email from 1 that doesn’t interview. The other four don’t interview or contact top applicants. He has ranked his programs and we wait! He has a strong #1 choice. Keep all the students waiting to know their fate in your mind!

Best wishes for your son.

Do you know how well a “first internship after getting a DVM” tends to pay? We are a year behind you, but I suspect that my daughter would not mind being independent of us within a short time after she gets her DVM.

They pay very little if you go for an SA academic rotating internship, better at private but depends on if you want to go on to a residency or not. You also have to watch for noncompetes, etc. Auburn $30,500 is the lowest we saw. Goes up to about $70,000 for big private hospitals, corporate med. Highest academic was 50 - 60k at Cornell or CSU.

You can go browse over on the VIRMP website and SEARCH internships. Each has the salary they are offering this year. My son’s top pick is a higher paying academic but his rent alone will be 60% of his income before taxes!

Of course if you go straight into practice you will make a lot more.

My son matched with his #1 choice for Small Animal Rotating Medicine/Surgery at Colorado State! We are all thrilled for him! It was a process!
