Visiting Boston

I’m going to Boston with my dad next week (from NYC). We’re seeing BC/BU on Thursday and Harvard/MIT on Friday. Saturday we’ll be exploring the town a little. Have any of you gone on a small trip like this and have any comments? Just wondering if you parents have any ideas of places to see/go, restaurants, etc. My mom said for me to look around the town a lot since its possible I may be going to school there. She mentioned something about Harvard square. Any tips?

We went to Quincy Market. That was pretty cool. Big crowds.

If you have time, it’s a nice 40-minute walk down Massachusetts Ave. from MIT to Harvard or vice versa. You’ll find some nice little restaurants and cafes tucked in along the street and at Central Square (about the halfway point). It will also give you some idea of the neighborhoods around MIT and Harvard.

Along the same lines, walk across the bridge from MIT to Boston U. or vice-versa. Great views of the sailing pavilions of both schools.

There are many more touristy things to do in Boston, but since most students strike out on foot (or take public transit), try to act like a student and explore the areas close to campuses. If there’s a home game and your dad is interested, maybe catch a game at Fenway Park.

Quincy Market, Harvard Square, Copley Square, Kenmore Square, Newbury Street, Prudential, take a duck boat tour!

You read my mind with the baseball game, haha. We are trying to catch a game in Boston, and will try when we go to Pittsburgh and DC :D

I think the Sox are out of town for a week or so. ;-( They might be back in time for your visit. I think the Sox release the players tickets about 2 hours prior to game time. H & S just go back from Philly and Pitts and saw games in both towns. Skipped the game in Baltimore because it was just too darn hot.

Lots of history if you are into that. You can walk the Freedom trail for free, but may have to pay so go into some of the buildings. The National Park Service Rangers conduct tours most days from a building neat the Old State House near Faneuil Hall/Quincy Market. You can take a Ferry out to one of the islands in the harbour from several locations downtown.

have fun and let us know how you like the schools.

Take a duck tour - it will give you a good overview of the city and it is fun!

I’ll have some suggestions for you when you visit Pittsburgh. We did a quick trip to Boston, but I don’t remember much. Nice city if you’re not a Yankees fan!

Thank you for all the responses!

@LurkNessMonster, haha Lets go Mets! =P That will be a problem if/when I visit Phillie. And I will definitely speak to you about Pitt when I go!

The North End in Boston - the Italian restaurant district and home of the Old North Church. Walk part of the historic Freedom Trail downtown - you just follow the line on the sidewalk. Allow a lot of time to wander the Harvard Square area. It and the Harvard campus meander in and out of one another. Don’t rub the foot of the John Harvard statue - it’s a lie that students rub it for good luck; drunk freshman guys do something entirely different to it each night. See Annenberg Hall and Sanders Theatre inside of Memorial Hall at Harvard. Park your car somewhere and take the T (the subway) to Boston, Cambridge, BU and BC (or just pass on the car and take the train to Boston). Right now BC is rated the most beautiful campus in the country on Princeton Review. I don’t know that I’d go that high, but it’s pretty great. If you’re going to check out Harvard, you might as well do Tufts too - it’s only another 3 miles out Massachusetts Ave.

Harvard Square on a Saturday–lots of people, energy and excitement. Park your car at the Alewife station and take the subway into Harvard Square (3 stops in, I think). An easy way to park your car and get around…you can walk around the shops, eat at Legal Seafood and walk around the campus.

I agree with the duck tour. I enjoyed the duck tour even though I had previously lived in Boston 10 years. So did my husband and he grew up in the Boston area. They are fun.

I was in Harvard Square a couple of weeks ago for lunch. We ate here - [John Harvard’s Brew House | Honest Food. Real Beer.](John Harvards – Product Research and Review) . It was very good.

I second the Brew House^. We eat there every time we’re in Boston (visiting our students). They take their friends there too. My favorite is the chicken pot-pie.

Saturday evening at the Pour House - this time of year it won’t be as crowded, but during the school year it’s full of students. Across the river from MIT. Good hamburgers, half-price 6-10 pm.

Just walking around both campuses (and the areas between) is fun.

You take your life in your hands with those duck tours:

The Sox are out of town next weekend. Arrowsmith and J. Geils are playing at Fenway next Saturday night. Right now, the weather people are calling for rain next Thursday and Friday, so come prepared.

Was in Boston over the 4th of July weekend, touring MIT and Harvard for D2. D1 came for the weekend from NYC where she is doing an internship. We took one day to walk The Freedom Trail using the narrative from our AAA guide book. Very impressive. We also really enjoyed the JFK Library and Museum. Did the entire weekend with public transportation and the hotel shuttle. Once I was home, I saw a segment on Food Network about the great sticky buns at Flour Cafe + Bakery which we’d have checked out if we’d known!

It’s so funny that you mentioned food network. I plan on going to a place called Kick A** Cupcake, which Adam Gurbler (sp?) mentioned was near MIT and Harvard and the students always go

Museum of Fine Arts, Prudential and Newbury if you’re into shopping, duck tour, Copley Square, Harvard Square, Haymarket, Quincy Market, Boston Symphony, Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory

Top of the Pru if you’re looking for a fine dining place.

I wouldn’t worry about risking your life on the duck tour! There are assumed risks with everything you do in life - after all, you could get fatally hit by a baseball at Fenway!

Blue Man Group! North End Italian restaurants…probably wouldn’t waste your time at BC…great school but nobody gets in unless u have a connection…

Blue Man Group is a franchise – they aren’t Boston-specific.

Me, I’d walk all up and down Beacon Hill and the Back Bay. And Newbury St.
