Visiting Stanford

I will be going to USC and my best friend will be going to Stanford this fall. We plan to visit each other. Here are my questions:

1) What is the best way to visit Stanford? Train, bus, car or plane?
2) Do USC and Stanford football teams play in the same league? If they do, will USC take busload of fans heading to Stanford at the away game? How does it work?

Many thanks,

USC and Stanford are both in the Pacific-10 league. I have no idea if they offer buses to the away games though, but I’d imagine they do. Even if they don’t, I’m sure a LOT of people go to the away games and would gladly set you up with transportation.

They play in the same league, and it should be pretty convenient to see games. However, it should be pretty easy to visit Stanford even when there isn’t a game.

I know they have a lot of really cheap buses that go from Los Angeles to the Bay Area, and it’s also really easy to take a plane from LAX to SFO or SJC. Usually some airlines have really great fares (~$50) and USC has shuttles taking you to LAX. After you land in the airport, you can easily hop onto BART and then transfer to a Caltrain which will eventually land you on Stanford’s doorstep. I’ve traveled just by public transportation from LA to Stanford, and it can get to be a bit of a hassle, but it’s not that horrible.

I’m going to USC this fall also and my best friends live in Palo Alto (where Stanford is) so I look forward to visiting them.

What is the best way to visit Stanford?
plane, LAX- SJO [ southwest airlines] and then have your friend pick you up at San Jose airport.
Driving between LA and Stanford takes about 7 hrs, 6 if you can get out of LA at other than commute times.

After you land in the airport, you can easily hop onto BART and then transfer to a Caltrain

that is only if you arrive at SFO- there is no BART connection in SJ.

^ Yes, very true. My bad!

Icy,

"They play in the same league, and it should be pretty convenient to see games. " - How does it work if USC plays Stanford? Will USC have busload of students heading to Stanford? How long is the stay? Do students have to pay for the tickets?

Sorry, I have no idea. You would have to ask a current USC student. Going with what dream said- there should be a ton of people driving up or whatever to see the game, so you should be able to find transportation.

Every year for football, USC alternates between playing away at the two bay area schools, Cal and Stanford. It’s called “The Weekender”. A LOT of USC students go up north by whatever method they can find and hang out in norcal for a weekend. If you have a lot of money, take the plane. For most, I would suggest going by car because it’ll be a LOT cheaper than any other method. Earlier this year when we went up to Berkeley, I went in a car of 4 and we only ended up paying $25 each for gas round trip. Compare that to the bus or a plane which will probably be significantly more.
