Visiting Yale

I’ll be visiting Yale sometime this fall, staying overnight, having an interview, and all that jazz.
I’m also interested in talking to some of the professors. Is this ok? I don’t want to take up their time or anything. And I REALLY don’t want to come across as someone who’s rubbing their shoulders with faculty to increase their chances. What do you suggest?

do it, I think it’ll show ur interested rather than sucking up. From what I’ve heard, one of Yale professors’ complaints is that students don’t come up to them in their office often just to chat/discuss ideas. I think they’ll appreciate ur gesture.

I live in New Haven and know many professors personally as friends and neighbors. Any one of them would be delighted to meet with you. In fact, I would URGE you to do this. It is a great way to get a feel for the place. If you are intimidated to send an email directly, you can call the secretary of the department you are interested in. He/she would be able to tell you which profs like to do this.

My D contacted two professors in two different departments via e-mail and requested meetings on the same day as her interview. Both were very friendly and agreed to meet with her (which they did) when we were there. She had very specific questions about certain things in each’s area of expertise after reviewing them on the Web. She loved it.

Very good advice, freelance.
