Vista in residence halls

Apparently, from the best I understand, it seems that VISTA is now working in the residence halls when you connect via the wired network. Apparently wireless is not up yet for Vista. I copied & pasted this from the USC website. ** July 3, 2007 **
UTS successfully upgraded the Cisco CleanAccess system for the University Wireless and Residential Network in early June 2007. This upgrade allows for compatibility with the MS Windows Vista operating system. In addition, the University antivirus software (TrendMicro) that is required for network access, has a new version that was tested and proved to be compatible with the Vista operating system. UTS teams continue to test a “beta” version of the VPN software that is required for University Wireless access on MS Windows Vista computers.

Therefore, MS Windows Vista will function with the Student Residential Network wired network (inside Residence Hall rooms). Access to the University Wireless network using MS Windows Vista is not currently supported at this time due to the compatability with the Cisco VPN client.

Sorry for seeming dense, but does this mean we should buy DS’s laptop with Vista or not?

It means that if you are buying a new PC, buy with Vista. Your computer will access all connections on the wired system using Vista. As of now, the Wireless system doesn’t support Vista. That doesn’t mean it won’t work. In a few weeks, the wireless system will be upgraded and certified for Vista. So, if your K will be satisfied with wired connection for a while, he or she will be ready when wireless support arrives. Or, buy a system with Windows XP SP2 and it will work on either connecting system for along time to come.

Or by a MAC, get BootCamp (free from Apple) and you can load either Vista or XP on the MAC. Your student could then use all connecting platforms to his or her advantage.

Best of luck.
