Visual Effects as EC?

Well I was wondering since this is one of my passions. I use Adobe After Effects CS3 and I edit my videos and make them really cool by adding those nice effects like light sabers, etc. I’ve been doing thse for a long while now like 3-4 years and I have to say I am pretty good. I learn from sites such as videocopilot.net and creativecow.net and I self-teach as well.

I want to go to NYU Tisch but my parents say get a professional degree 1st then do whatever you want. My dad is a pharmacist and owns like 4-5 pharmacys in Astoria, Queens so we get alot of money and if I got a pharmacy degree I can work there then still go to Tisch then make my dreams come true of becoming a lead editor for a film company like Paramount pictures.

My parents think this is just a hobby and cant really be considered an EC and I keep telling them I have a talent for this kind of stuff but yeah you know parents. By the way, I am only in 9th grade but this has been concerning me for awhile since I feel guilty sometimes when I am like you know editing videos and posting them on facebook/YouTube instead of like playing my electric guitar lol which I DO play “sometimes” for the past 6 years . . . Any insight appreciated.

There’s no reason not to put something like this on your applications; it’s no different than the kid who paints outside of a formal program. And some colleges allow you to send in supplemental works, so you could send some of your work to them as well.
