Vitamix

I’ve owned one for about 8 years and can’t live with out it… I gave one to my son for Christmas last year. He uses it every day.

Sunday I was using it to cream vegetables and it blew a fuse in the house. Repaired the fuse an it did it again although the mixer worked on that outlet. So my son brought his ever and just finished when it broke again. other appliances still work on that outlet.

Weird coincidence? What should we do. Bought them both at Costco but would feel bad asking them to replace both.

What is the amperage of that circuit? What else is plugged into that circuit? Vitamix is 11.5 amp apparently - wow. What a beast.

I don’t know but have been using it there for years. Not only that, but if I just get a new one it will only happen again.

If you’ve been using the Vitamix in that circuit for years, I’d try it on a different circuit. If it blows that circuit, it’s the Vitamix. If it works on a different circuit (making sure it’s at least a 15 amp fuse), I think you have a problem with the circuit itself. Since you say “fuse” I’m assuming you have a very old electrical system, since newer systems use circuit breakers. Old electrical systems can develop problems and sometimes cause fires.

Hmmm, niece is a renter and registered for a Vitamix. Doubt she knows it could cause a problem with the outlet. Yikes!

It is definitely something with the circuit. The Vitamix draws 11.5 amps, so it should work on a 15 amp circuit. I can think of a couple of things to try:

1)Plug in something that generates a fairly heavy load, like a blow dryer or a toaster, and see if it blows the circuit, that will confirm what you have seen before

2)Try and figure out what is on this circuit as well, could something else with a relatively heavy draw been plugged in, like a heater, a fan, etc? That with the Vitamix could bring it over the 15 amp limit, one easy way is to trip the breaker or take out the fuse for the circuit, and see if anything that was running appears to be off.

3)If it is a circuit breaker, it could be the breaker is old and is tripping too early (not as likely, but could be a factor).

4)I would think of replacing the outlet and seeing what happens, I have had outlets that were partially shorted that I had trouble with when plugging things in, turned out to be a defective outlet. I recommend a heavy duty outlet, many of the replacement outlets you find at Home Depot are really cheap, the ones they rate as heavy duty seem to be a bit better made, and only cost a couple of bucks more than the cheapie ones.

Call an electrician to track it down. We had an outlet die and called someone in. Tested all on same circuit and finally asked if there were any outside outlets. That’s when I thought of sump pump we added under house after the fact. Sure enough, whoever installed in added it to existing circuit instead of new one. Now this was a good 15 years after the fact that outlet died - so just because you always used it on the circuit before doesn’t mean it’s not an electrical problem with way you are wired.

If two different blenders trip the breaker, chances are much higher that there is something wrong with the circuit than with any of the two blenders. 11.5 amp on a 15 amp circuit should be ok in theory… In practice, there are other things that might be going on. Have an electrician take a look at the situation.

My DH, the former electrician turned engineer says…call an electrician. Circuits and breakers CAN fail over time for any number of reasons.

The unfortunate ending to this story is that my son put it aside to try and fix it while my other son put mine at the curb where it was immediately snatched up… Then someone told us that the Vitamix will fix itself after a while and sure enough, Son’s works and I have to buy a new one.

P.S. anybody know a good price on a Vitamix right now?

My sister got one on eBay!

Costco has a good return policy, so if you buy it there, they will always take it back if you have any issues.

I feel sick that your vitamin went to the curb! Hope you can find a reasonable replacement soon.

Returning something after 8 years of perfect use is abuse of the return policy generosity. We all pay for this collectively.
