Voice lesson policy reqarding belt

Is there a set policy regarding voice lessons at Point Park? Particularly, are so many years required of classical before branching into contemporary (belt)? If a student comes to the school without vocal issues (injuries, bad habits, etc) and good classical technique, can they move on ahead or is there a prescribed plan every student must follow?

As a MT major at PPU, from my experience, the voice teacher you’re assigned to will work with you individually on your vocal needs the strengths, like the classical “legit” or “belt.” There is no specific set course of training in that area, but students are encouraged to develop foundations from a classical standpoint. Believe me though, there are PLENTY of fantastic belters at this school.
At the end of the first semester however, students have a vocal jury which usually consists of only one song. For the first two semesters the song generally must be a “classic” broadway or art song (Cole Porter, R&R, Gershwin, etc). Then as you progress through the program there is more freedom in song choices.
