voice majors

Is like every undergrad School of Music full of voice majors, like more than any other instrument? It seems to be that way from when I was doing the whole college search process thing. There are SOOOO many people here who are majoring in either vocal performance, composition/voice concentration, music ed/vocal concentration, or BA/vocal concentration.

There are indeed more voice majors than any other instrument. The difference is actually quite vast. It is exceedingly competitive.

+I beg to differ with you, violoncello! There are more string majors at most conservatories, especially violins ( In particular where you are located- just add up the studios!). Some schools are skewed in a particular direction, such as WCC which specializes in voice and keyboard instruments and has an excellent reputation for music education.
All of that aside, schools make a lot of $$ from VP majors, especially the legions of sopranos. There is an unfortunate tendency, which could be because voices mature later, for kids to think that just because they “can” sing ( skill level aside) that they can/should attend school as VP majors and many find themselves ill prepared when compared to their instrumental counterparts. Some study of the numbers shows that there is quite a disparity between the number of VP majors admitted as freshmen to the number who actually graduate with a BM in VP.
