Voice majors

My son wants to major in voice and has been told by teachers that he has great potential and great “fluency and sophistication” but his technique is still that of a boy soprano (which he was for years). Can he still get thru the audition screens like this?

You posted on the music forum two weeks ago. That is the forum with the most information on auditions and music admissions. Here is your post for people’s info here on the “applying to college” forum. Classical voice - College Majors / Music Majors - College Confidential Forums

Hi. My DS is a HS junior with about a 3.6. GPA. He’s a lyric baritone with lots of professional experience before voice change and lots of lessons since. Is working with a consultant as well as voice teacher and coach and a conducting teacher and going to a summer program. Has trial lessons (including a call back) in the pipeline. We don’t need much aid. Reassure me he’ll get in somewhere.

If he wants immersion in music, he should apply to a range of audition BM programs and a few non-audition. If a BA is at all interesting to him he can submit a music supplement which will help with admissions to those colleges (no audition for admission). In a BA program he can major in music, double major with something else, or do a major/minor. Double degree BA/BM or even BA/MM is the other option. In a BA program he could do extracurricular performance, lessons for credit, and electives.

Voices take time to develop so the timeline can be slower. He has lots of possible paths for undergrad.

We don’t know much about his academics but of course he will get in somewhere. And he can go on to do graduate work.

Noone can really answer your question. We haven’t heard him sing. We don’t know his grades/scores. We don’t know what his goal is for undergrad and what degree he wants.

If you are anxious, talk to his teacher. His teacher is not missing the info we are missing. I assure you things tend to work out, at least in my experience personally and here on CC.
