Volunteer Forms

I was just wondering… I’ve been volunteering as a lacrosse coach the past couple months. When you go to apply for college, do they ask you how many hours you worked? Is there any formal documention that needs to be submitted for the amount of hours to be recognized by the college?

Colleges don’t want formal documentation of things like that.
The majority of colleges admit the majority of students who apply to them, and also admit those students on the basis of their stats – grades, class rank, scores. It’s only the very top colleges that care about ECs that much and that’s because places like HPYS have such an overabundance of highly qualified applicants that the colleges can make selections based on creating a well rounded class.

For colleges like HPYS, it’s not how many hours one put into doing CS that counts: but what one accomplished by one’s community service. Doing 500 hours of telephone answering won’t impress such colleges that much, for instance. However, being coach of an elementary school soccer team; raising $5,000 for the homeless shelter; starting a tutoring program at your church – activities like this that demonstrate your organizational skills and sense of responsibility would be impressive. The colleges wouldn’t be counting hours, but would be weighing the impact of what you did.

In your case, if colleges allowed, your could submit an extra recommendation from a parent of a kid whom you coached or from whoever supervises you. You also could write your essay about your coaching experience.

I was told by my daughters hs advisor that this does count and I believe here in NY it counts as (not sure) 1/2 a credit for 25hrs. It counts towards community service and there is a form you can get from your guidance office to document this. My D also coached a cheerleading team and 2 years in a row asst coached the middle school vb team. I do also have her voluteering at the local pet shelter and she will be candy striping to get addtl credit. I would check it out. No matter what it doesn’t hurt…
