How much volunteer work do the people who were accepted at Brown have?

Is volunteer work very important? I’m a junior now, with not much (at all) behind my belt. I was wondering how this would affect my chances next year.

My mom’s friend helps out with Habitat for Humanity, so am hoping I can help out with them over the summer.

I was also contemplating volunteering at a local hospital on Saturday mornings, but didn’t want that to look too cliche.

Any advice for this Brown-hopeful junior?

If you’re not into volunteering, don’t do it just to pad your application. What counts is passion and commitment to something, so if volunteering isn’t your thing, there’s no point in doing it just to get into college. Spend your time doing something you’re really passionate about and good at, and that will look better on your application.

That said, there’s a lot to be said for doing volunteer work. Give it a try – you may love it! But do it for its own sake, not to get into Brown.

I could not agree more with the above reply. That said, do it, helping others is a worthy undertaking.

Even having a passion doesnt help so you might as well.
