Volunteering Question.

Living in the rural part of Hawaii, there isnt much opportunity to volunteer seeing as most of the volunteering takes part in Honolulu (Hour plus drive). Seeing as I dont have a car, or I dont have any way to get down there, how do I present this?

Do I present it all since it might sound like an excuse? Or do I mention in my essay that there isnt many volunteering opportunities where I live?

Thanks alot if you respond.

Anyone ?

There are going to be volunteering opportunities where you live. Retirement center? Library? Hospital? Park which you can clean up w/ authorization from city council? The list goes on…

You don’t need to volunteer to get into college. No reason to explain on an app why you haven’t volunteered. Very few colleges factor into admission things like ECs, work experience, and volunteering. Those that do are top places like Harvard, which have such an overabundance of high stat applicants that the colleges can pick and choose among them to create an active, diverse class.

Thanks alot for the responses.

Poseidenj: No retirement center, no hospital, parks but they arent ever dirty, and there is a library but my moms really good friend works there and she says there is no way I could really help do anything there.

Northstarmom: I thought about that and it does make sense. Thanks alot.

Volunteer because its a good thing to do. Not everything is about college applications and if colleges even look at volunteering. Helping others makes you a better person. A kinder person. A more understanding person. Even helping an elderly neighbor with yard work, while may not impress harvard or your local state flagship, it will make you feel good.

and that is more than enough of a reason to volunteer. It saddens me that people think if it isn’t looked at by colleges, its not worthwhile. Not everything one does should or can end up on a resume, that doesn’t negate its importance or value.

Excellent point.

But when you have to take a 2 1/2 hour bus ride at 6 in the morning to get to most volunteer opportunities, then you have to think about.
