Voting - and using absentee ballots

anyone helping their kids with their 1st election? mine got their applications for absentee ballots, just sent daughter her ballot and we’ll chat on the phone when she gets it to be sure she completes it correctly. son was dragging his feet but finally mailed his application

If they want to vote at their colleges, they should look into what hoops they need to jump through. Some states try to make it difficult for residential college students to vote at their colleges, even though they will spend most of their time there over four (or more) years.

My kids chose to vote in their home state and requested absentee ballots prior to returning to school after winter break.

Just make sure you check all rules around absentee voting.

That was my plan when I was in college but I registered by mail so I was required to vote in person the first time. That was a PITA

My college kid registered to vote before she left for college, but had to request an absentee ballot–by MAIL, with a hand written letter–for the last election. Couldn’t even request it online. She followed the procedure carefully, in plenty of time. Then the ballot arrived at her school halfway across the country barely a week before the election date, with just enough time for her to fill it out, send it back the same day, and MAYBE it would arrive in time to be counted. Frustrating. The next (local) election was mail only. We sent her the ballot with a family member who was travelling to visit her. Not sure about the upcoming primary. I think she might be registered independent and needs to request which party ballot she prefers in order to vote in the primary. Just to make things more complicated. You apparently can’t be on the mail ballot list but have it sent to another state. Makes sense, but it should at least be workable to request an absentee ballot, and they should send them out in a timely manner.

My kid voted in the last presidential election while in Rwanda. All done via absentee ballot. She requested it online…and they sent it to her. She completed it, and mailed it back. No problems.
