VP Nomination Question

On the USNA admissions site, for the Vice Pres nomination it says to sent the letter of application, and then to

“Supporting material for the vice presidential nomination should be sent to Naval Academy Admissions using the address below after you receive a candidate number.”

what exactly does that mean, supporting material? i have my candidate number though…anyone else here applying for 2010?

I think that means transcipts and other letters of recommendation. I took this from the sample on the website. I did this for the class of 09 and didn’t have a problem. I didn’t get the nomination though. I hope this info helps.

Notes: Do not forward transcripts / supporting letters to the Vice President’s office. We will use the documentation submitted with your application when we review your request for a Vice Presidential nomination.

Reading between the lines - the VP nom goes to the top 5 candidates that the academy wants that fail to win a nomination by other means. (Or the VP nomination goes to someone else, which frees up another nomination…) The USNA provides a recommendation to the VP for these slots. Hence, the VP’s office requires no additional documentation.

My son (WP class of 2008, LOA) received a VP nomination to the USNA. He did not get an appointment. Obviously no explaination. I believe that he did not get an appointment due to the fact that he was 20/25 in one eye and could not get a medical waiver. They only give out “X” amount of waivers(changes slightly from year to year according to the candidate pool). I believe most waivers are used for recruited athletes (which he was not.) Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Regardless - He is excelling at USMA - So it all worked out for the best.

My daughter received an LOA to both WP and USNA and appointments to both. She was not a recruited athlete to USNA and has worse than 20/25 in both eyes. I don’t believe I have ever seen any statistics on LOA’s issued other than how many in total were given out (approx). I would imagine they are used to help get both recruited athletes as well as those extemely qualified academically or both.

Thanks Shogun for educating me. I should have chosen my words a little more carefully. The point I was actually trying to make is - a VP nomination does not always result in an appointment.

Agreed
Many who get a nomination do not receive appointments.

I have worse than 20/25 in my right eye, that means that I will be “disqualified” from the physical?

No. But you will need a waiver.

When do you usually find out if you have recieved any of the nominations, particularly the presidential?

MOC usually notify candidates as early as October to as late as late-January with most occurng in the Dec-Jan timeframe. I do not know when presidential or VP nominations are announced.

We found out about the Pres. Nom. within a month of submitting the request, and shortly thereafter (Dec. 19) of the appointment to the Class of '08. Hope that helps. Only 100 mids are allowed admittance on Presidential appointments.
