No, do not act as if Cal Poly will rescind your application. Get informed and communicate. Call the admissions office at 805.756.2311 or email them at admissions@calpoly.edu – one D may not kill the offer.

Also, communicate with your teacher and let them know what is at stake and do whatever it takes to pull a C. Extra homework, extra credit – negotiate for what you want. There is not a teacher on the planet that would willingly let a student get disqualified from a good college if they showed effort and determination to improve.

Now, go out there and communicate and negotiate. Great time to learn how to do this. I once had an econ class that I failed the first exam on and got a C on the next. Then I got busy communicated, got extra help – guess what? Got an A in the class. Surprise, surprise…

Does your school put “semester” grades on transcripts or only “year end” grades. If they only put “year end” grades, then what would your “cum” grade in AP Cal be?

And, what can you do to not get a D in AP Cal this semester?

i’ve talked to my calculus teacher before about pulling up my grade but he will not budge! he does not give extra credit, and quite often reminds me that its not about my grade but “what i have learned” - which doesnt really say much either.
but anyways I got a C for my first semester, but a D on the third quarter and there is no way i will get B this quarter to average out the semester to a C

However, I am trying to improve my scores so I can atleast show cal poly that I am trying to improve myself and am still working hard.

I will email Cal Poly admissions though soon!
Thanks for your advice!

now any advice on which university to choose? :)

If you find out CalPoly won’t accept you, then you have no choice but VT. However, if you DO have a choice, it should be CalPoly. The architecture major there is very prestigious.

ricegal, VT is very highly regarded in undergrad architecture , ranked number 1 or 2 in some polls I’ve seen, above Cal Poly. Just curious as to why you feel Cal Poly is the clear choice here?

I think the OP mentioned that CalPoly was the only school where he/she got into the architecture program (I may have my posters mixed up, though).

Cal Poly is awesome and VT is awesome. Which state do you live in? I would choose the school with the lowest (in-state) tuition and the one that feels right. Go to both schools and tour them. My kid will go to Cal Poly for engineering as we are California residents and it blew away the competition. Cal Poly bested UCLA, UCSD and other great schools after the tours. It was the right fit for him. Incidentally, I was raised in Virginia so I know VT’s reputation as well.

By the way, your teacher seems like a jerk. Just my two cents…

I live internationally at the moment - we don’t have instate anywhere and I don’t really have a house anywhere.
Cost differences are not significant

literally i just need to choose haha both are basically the same!

I have toured VT but now Cal Poly though! SO i am DEFINITELY worried about going to a campus i have not visited. Ive looked at online tours and read things here on CC but…i mean who knows

I don’t think the teacher’s a jerk, but that’s just my opinion. What have you learned in Calc? How did you do on the AP test? You won’t get far at Cal Poly without a solid understanding of calculus.

Is this Calc AB or BC? If it’s Calc BC, here’s something to consider: see if your school will allow you to drop the BC course and just get credit for the coursework you’ve completed in Calc AB.

You need to talk to your guidance counselor right away. You need some kind of mediation btw. the teacher and you (and not a parent). If you really want to attend Cal Poly then you are going to have to advocate for yourself, as well as do all you can to bring up the grade (i.e. get tutoring immediately). Ask the teacher if they are willing to suggest a tutor --it will let them know that you intend to learn the material and are not just hoping to bring up the grade (but your grade will come up, so you both win).

Do call Cal Poly admissions and let them know what’s going on. They may let you know now that you will be rescinded which will make the decision to enroll at VT easy, but that won’t mean VT won’t rescind too. I know JMU will rescind with a D, so VT I am guessing isn’t playing around either. Give it everything you’ve got to turn this around. You can do it!
