W-2 question, in case someone knows

We’ve started the FAFSAs for two college kids, thought we were basically done - then just today one of the kids received a W-2 from a job he worked over Christmas break 2011. He did not work even one day in January 2012 (if he’d worked New Year’s Day it would apply but he did not).

Income from one year can’t be carried over onto the next year’s W-2, can it?

If you got a 2012 W-2, it’s most likely because your child was paid the first week of 2012 for hours worked in 2011. What matters is when he received the paycheck…not when the work was actually performed. So, if he was paid in 2012 and you got a 2012 W-2, it’s reportable as 2012 income.

Thanks! Thought it had to be something like that but couldn’t find his pay stubs here at home to verify dates. He’s the only one who’s ever had a seasonal job that cut off right on the last day of the year so we had never run into the situation. Appreciate the info - I’m not clueless about such things normally, but I guess I always thought if earned in the year then had to be reported for that year - know better now! ;)
