W Athletic recruit BC vs. CC

My D is having conversations with a coach at Columbia. She has been told that she could be recruited by either Barnard or Columbia. Whose choice is that-- the coach’s or the student’s? I assume it makes no difference in terms of the team. She has an AI of 218.

If I were to ask her which she would want, she says that she sees advantages to either.

It’s your d’s choice which school she wants to apply to (or both). And you are correct: regardless of whether she is a Barnard or CC student, she will be eligible to play for Columbia U. teams.

One of my d’s first year roommates was a recruited athlete and was admitted to both Barnard and Columbia and chose Barnard. Just one case in point!

A lot of factors… Does she want to play professionally? What is she studying? Financial situation?

She is a swimmer–not much professional stuff there–sure she would love to see how far in the NCAA or further she could go, but it isn’t the overriding passion–if it were she would be looking at Florida or Auburn–She would play on the same team regardless if BC or CC anyway.

She is a writer (she sees a creative writing major at CC-- BC has a sub-concentration w/in English-- would she have to be a CC student to take the Creative Writing major at CC?).

She would not be a candidate for financial aid in any case.

Your daughter has to decide what culture she’d prefer. At Barnard, she’d be surrounded by girls interested in the liberal arts, a great deal of whom are English majors and interested in creative writing. At Columbia, she’d be surrounded by people interested in a much greater variety of subjects, and would see more guys on a day-to-day basis. It’s certainly possible to spend all your time at Columbia if you go to Barnard (and it’s a little harder, but still possible, to do the opposite), but they do have unique cultures and strengths.
