<p>Reading is my passion. Ever since I entered grade school, I was always fascinated with the written word. It gave me the ability to escape from my boring, archetypal life, and enter a world where the sky (or my imagination) is the limit. I read the works of many authors, and always appreciated their ability to use the English language to present images and ideas. I was amazed at their knowledge and the impressive wit that was prevalent in the voice of many notable works, such as Harry Potter by J.K Rowling, the Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, and many other writings.
It was through books, most of which I read of my own accord, that I accumulated most of the knowledge I now take for granted. As my grasp of my English language grew, so did my pursuit of enlightenment, as well as my desire to read and, in later years, analyze more complex forms of literature, such as 1984 by George Orwell, the Portable Atheist by Christopher Hitchens, and Invisible Man by Ralph Ellison. These books had a profound impact on my personal beliefs, my philosophy, and my code of ethics.
It was within these books, most written during or after the Realism period, and most relating to social, political, and personal strife, that I developed an interest in philosophy, which only augmented my desire to learn, this time of far more abstract concepts, such as the human condition and the meaning of life. The complexity of the world around stuck a chord in me, giving me a deep interest and attachment to humanity.
Out of ambition and envy, I decided to take another step forward and not only read works, but to produce them myself. I submitted and ended up publishing works in our schools Literary Magazine, which I later joined as a staffed writer. I have only recently begun to develop my skills at this art.
As I finish my secondary school education, I find myself at the crossroads of my life. I cannot say that I know what I will become, or even what I would want to become, but I do know that want to make an impact in the lives of others. I have learned the pleasures of reading, and being able to immerse oneself in the grandiose atmosphere of erudition, and I wish to give others the opportunity to feel the same. I dont claim to have completed my quest for greater understanding, and I feel that one can never declare complete victory over ignorance, but I know that through reading, one can come a step closer, and no harm will ever come to he or she who seeks.</p>
