Mr. Clemons’ mother was the prom queen of an all-black, segregated high school in Dunedin who fell in love with his father, then interning as a teacher at her school. When she was 18, she gave birth to little Michael. She raised him as a single mom, earning her living as the first black office employee in the city. She rose from receptionist to supervisor while raising her children in a cinderblock apartment known locally as, “the projects.” On Sunday they went to church.</p>

<p>“I wouldn’t trade my upbringing with anybody,” says Mr. Clemons, 44, dressed in a silver-grey Zegna suit and a hat from local haberdashers Big It Up. "We were poor but we didn’t know it. I tell my kids, I always got As and Bs, and if I ever got a C I couldn’t play sports. Back then, 85-94 was a B. When [my girls] come home with an 80 and tell me it’s an A, I say no. I don’t know who came up with this. That ‘A’ stands for ‘almost.’ "</p>

<p>Mr. Clemons, a graduate of the College of William and Mary University in Virginia – the same school as Thomas Jefferson – never seems to stop challenging himself. Today, he commands top rates as an inspirational speaker on the corporate circuit, earning far more than football ever paid him.
