I’m in a bit of a stump and not to sure what to do. I’m planning on transferring to another college for architecture but I was told the decision for my first choice school won’t come in until mid April or summer. The other school I was thinking of going to was Houston, I got accepted but to reserve a spot I need to tell the architecture department by May 1st. So I can wait for the decision from my first school but if I don’t get accepted I have to hope that Houston still has a spot available. I know architecture is very limited in space and afraid I might lose out on both school.
Has anyone been in this situation? I wanted to try to ask if I can reserve a spot and if I decide not to attend then I can just tell them, but I feel this might look bad
You should deposit at the school you are already accepted at. You might never be called by the other school. If you do get called, you will lose your deposit at the first school, but that’s the way it is. No one can force you to attend.
@jab116 So if you have until May 1 to accept a spot at Houston and the other gives you a decision by the end of April, you are OK, correct? This would be best-case scenario, obviously. If that doesn’t happen, do you need to pay any kind of deposit at Houston by May1 to hold your spot?
Any idea why the other school is taking so long? Are you on a waiting list of some sort? May 1 is a pretty standard deadline for making commitments to schools.
From years of experience, schools know that a percentage of deposit payers will matriculate elsewhere due to waitlist dominos, so they plan for it. Don’t worry a bit about it.
So I can tell Houston I will be attending even though I’m not 100% sure yet? They haven’t requested a deposit but if they do, I wouldn’t mind.
Also, I don’t think I’m waitlisted. I did ask if they were waiting for my spring grades but was told my application was already complete and in review. In the A&M transfer thread, I haven’t heard of anyone getting their decision from architecture yet so I assume they just send their decisions late.
This kind of thing is really common for transfers. If you have not heard back yet from B, and you would be happy to transfer to A, then accept the offer and pay the deposit at A before A’s cut off date. Then if B does offer you a space, you can decide if you prefer B to A. If you do decide to accept B, you deposit at B before their cut off date, and you let A know that your plans have changed. A will probably keep your deposit, but Oh well.
If C, D, and E are also in the running, you can repeat this cycle pretty much up until the first day of class if you want or need to.
